Virgo
23 August to 23 September. The maiden with the sheaf of wheat: an earth sign that gets it right, ruled by Mercury, the planet the tradition associates with analysis and craft. This page is the reference, written plainly, followed by the one thing most sign pages will not tell you.
What the tradition actually says
Western astrology reads a Virgo Sun as an identity organised around getting it right. The work is in the correction, the detail and the standard, and the standard is applied inward first. The earth element gives the practical sense of what actually works; the mutable modality gives the readiness to adjust, which is why the tradition describes Virgo as the craftsman rather than the architect. Mercury's rulership here is analytical rather than talkative: the mind that sorts, checks and improves.
The honest shadow readings in the classical sources are a critical eye that turns on its owner hardest of all, worry that rehearses what could go wrong, and a fussiness about method that can lose the point of the work. The tradition's word for the shadow is not coldness; it is anxiety, dressed as thoroughness.
Common misreadings
Virgo is not "the neat freak"; the tradition reads a mind that wants things to work properly, and plenty of Virgo Suns live in chaos while holding a fierce standard about one thing. It is not without feeling; usefulness is how the feeling is expressed. And a Sun sign describes what you are consciously building, not the whole person: your Moon, your rising sign and thirty other placements say the rest, which is why we calculate all of them.
The part other sign pages leave out
If you are a Virgo Sun in Western astrology, your Sun in the Vedic system is probably in Leo.

Western astrology anchors its zodiac to the seasons; Vedic astrology anchors its to the stars. The two rulers have drifted about 24.2 degrees apart over two thousand years, so if you were born between 23 August and 16 September, your Vedic Sun sits in Leo, in one of the lunar mansions Magha, Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni. Born 17 September to 23 September, you keep Virgo in both systems, in the mansion of . Neither ruler is wrong. They are measuring differently, and any product that shows you only one is choosing tidiness over the whole truth.
Those dates are 2026's. The Sun reaches the sidereal boundary at 02:17 UTC on 17 September, so a birth on that day is settled by the hour and the place, and the split moves by about a day every seventy years as the two zodiacs drift apart.

Questions people ask
Is Virgo compatible with my sign?
Sun-sign compatibility is the postcard version: two placements out of the eighty a real pair comparison reads. The traditions also disagree with each other about pairs, which we show rather than hide. The honest answer needs both charts, and the free calculator is where it starts.
What is a Virgo Moon or rising?
A Virgo Moon reads as the emotional pattern (feelings that are managed by being useful, and that worry when there is nothing to fix), and Virgo rising as the first impression of precision and modesty, and the frame of the whole chart. Same sign, three different jobs. Your own combination is on your free chart.
Which is right, my Western sign or my Vedic one?
Both. They are two internally consistent rulers laid against the same sky, about 24.2 degrees apart. What matters is knowing which one a reading is using, and what each was designed to do well.
We read charts for pattern and coherence, not prediction. Nothing here tells you what will happen, and nothing here tells you who you are; it shows a structure and leaves the judgement with you.
