Purva Phalguni

The eleventh of the 27 lunar mansions, the layer of the Vedic sky that Western astrology does not have. Purva Phalguni is the nakshatra of rest and pleasure: its deity is Bhaga, who gives enjoyment and its share, its symbol is the front legs of a bed, and its stars are in the hindquarters of the Lion. The name means the former red one, the first of a pair.

What the tradition says

Purva Phalguni's image is of the bed and what happens in it: rest, love, pleasure, and the creative ease that comes from them. The classical texts read it as charm, generosity, a talent for enjoyment and for making others enjoy, and a warmth that draws people in. Venus rules the mansion, which gives the pleasure its grace; this is enjoyment that is treated as necessary rather than as a reward.

The honest shadow in the sources is indulgence: a vanity that needs an audience, a laziness that Bhaga's ease can slide into, and a carelessness about consequences when the pleasure is good. The texts say Purva Phalguni people must learn that rest is for rising from.

A Purva Phalguni Moon

A Purva Phalguni Moon describes a mind that wants to enjoy and to be enjoyed: feelings that are warm, generous and easily flattered, comfort in company and in pleasure, and a real dislike of hardship. Anyone born with the Moon here begins life in a Venus period, and the sequence of their planetary seasons runs from there.

The four padas

All four of Purva Phalguni's padas fall in sidereal Leo. The navamsa runs Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio across them; the tradition reads the first, Leo within Leo, as the most theatrical, the third as the most devoted to partnership, and the fourth as the one where the pleasure has the most intensity and the most cost.

In degrees: pada 1 from 13°20′ Leo to 16°40′ Leo with a Leo navamsa, pada 2 from 16°40′ Leo to 20° Leo with a Virgo navamsa, pada 3 from 20° Leo to 23°20′ Leo with a Libra navamsa and pada 4 from 23°20′ Leo to 26°40′ Leo with a Scorpio navamsa.

Why your Western chart never mentions this

There is no Western equivalent of Purva Phalguni.

Western astrology divides the sky into twelve signs and stops. The Vedic system lays 27 mansions of 13°20′ over its twelve signs, a finer grain with its own deities, symbols and timing system. There is no Western equivalent of Purva Phalguni, which is why a person can know their "big three" thoroughly and still meet something new the first time their Vedic chart is calculated. It is not that one system is finer-grained and therefore truer; they are answering different questions, and we show you both so you can see where they agree, and where they argue.

The Sun passes through Purva Phalguni from about 30 August to 13 September each year, which Western astrology calls Virgo. A Moon can be here on any day of the year, since the Moon crosses a mansion in about a day, and it is the Moon the tradition reads first.

Questions people ask

Is Purva Phalguni a good nakshatra?

The tradition does not rank the mansions as good and bad; each carries a capacity and a cost, and Purva Phalguni's are the gift of enjoyment and the tax of indulgence. Readings that call nakshatras lucky or unlucky are selling something.

What if my Moon is at the edge of Purva Phalguni?

Then your pada matters more than usual, and your birth time matters more than usual, since the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and crosses from Magha into Purva Phalguni and on into Uttara Phalguni within two. The calculator shows your exact degree and flags it when a placement sits near an edge.

I am a Leo in Western astrology. Is Purva Phalguni the same thing?

No. Your Western sign comes from the tropical zodiac; Purva Phalguni is a sidereal mansion that lies inside sidereal Leo. You can be a Western Leo with no Purva Phalguni placements at all, and a Western Virgo with a Purva Phalguni Moon. The free chart shows your actual pair.
