Uttara Phalguni

The twelfth of the 27 lunar mansions, the layer of the Vedic sky that Western astrology does not have. Uttara Phalguni is the nakshatra of the kept word: its deity is Aryaman, who watches over contracts, marriage and friendship, its symbol is the back legs of a bed, and its star is Denebola, the tail of the Lion. The name means the latter red one, the second of the pair.

What the tradition says

Uttara Phalguni's image is of the bed's other end: what holds the pleasure of Purva Phalguni up, which is agreement, patronage and loyalty. The classical texts read it as reliability, generosity of a formal kind, a talent for friendship and for the kind of help that comes with obligations honoured on both sides. The Sun rules the mansion, which gives the loyalty its authority; this is the friend who is also a patron.

The honest shadow in the sources is the contract held too tightly: a rigidity about what was agreed, a disappointment in others that becomes contempt, and a generosity that keeps accounts. The texts say Uttara Phalguni people must learn that a kept word is a gift, not a debt.

A Uttara Phalguni Moon

An Uttara Phalguni Moon describes a mind that keeps faith: feelings organised around loyalty and fair dealing, warmth given steadily rather than freely, and a real hurt when an agreement is broken. Anyone born with the Moon here begins life in a Sun period, and the sequence of their planetary seasons runs from there.

The four padas

Uttara Phalguni crosses a sign boundary: its first pada falls in sidereal Leo and the other three in Virgo. The tradition reads the Leo pada as the patron, generous from a position of standing, and the Virgo padas as the same loyalty expressed as service, the friend who does the work. Two Uttara Phalguni Moons either side of that line share the kept word and differ in how it is kept.

Why your Western chart never mentions this

There is no Western equivalent of Uttara Phalguni.

Western astrology divides the sky into twelve signs and stops. The Vedic system lays 27 mansions of 13°20′ over its twelve signs, a finer grain with its own deities, symbols and timing system. There is no Western equivalent of Uttara Phalguni, which is why a person can know their "big three" thoroughly and still meet something new the first time their Vedic chart is calculated. It is not that one system is finer-grained and therefore truer; they are answering different questions, and we show you both so you can see where they agree, and where they argue.

The Sun passes through Uttara Phalguni from about 13 September to 27 September each year, which Western astrology calls Virgo and Libra. A Moon can be here on any day of the year, since the Moon crosses a mansion in about a day, and it is the Moon the tradition reads first.

Questions people ask

Is Uttara Phalguni a good nakshatra?

The tradition does not rank the mansions as good and bad; each carries a capacity and a cost, and Uttara Phalguni's are the gift of the kept word and the tax of keeping accounts. Readings that call nakshatras lucky or unlucky are selling something.

What if my Moon is right on the Leo to Virgo boundary?

Then your pada matters more than usual, and your birth time matters more than usual, since the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day. The calculator shows your exact degree and flags it when a placement sits near an edge.

I am a Leo in Western astrology. Is Uttara Phalguni the same thing?

No. Your Western sign comes from the tropical zodiac; Uttara Phalguni is a sidereal mansion that partly overlaps sidereal Leo. You can be a Western Leo with no Uttara Phalguni placements at all, and a Western Virgo with a Uttara Phalguni Moon. The free chart shows your actual pair.
