Libra
23 September to 23 October. The scales: an air sign that weighs things, ruled by Venus, the planet the tradition associates with harmony, proportion and the other person. This page is the reference, written plainly, followed by the one thing most sign pages will not tell you.
What the tradition actually says
Western astrology reads a Libra Sun as an identity organised around the other person. Decisions are weighed in relation to somebody, and proportion matters, in arguments and in rooms alike. The air element gives the detachment needed to see both sides; the cardinal modality gives the drive to act, which is why the tradition describes Libra as the diplomat who starts the negotiation rather than the one who waits to be asked. Venus's rulership adds the feeling for beauty and for fairness, which the tradition treats as the same instinct.
The honest shadow readings in the classical sources are indecision that waits for the room to choose, a wish to be liked that bends the truth to keep the peace, and a difficulty telling one's own preference apart from the partner's. The scales that weigh everything can weigh for ever, and the tradition says so.
Common misreadings
Libra is not "the pushover sign"; the tradition's Libra is a cardinal sign, which means it initiates, and it can be immovable once a judgement is made. It is not superficial; the concern with surfaces is a concern with proportion, and proportion is a form of justice. And a Sun sign describes what you are consciously building, not the whole person: your Moon, your rising sign and thirty other placements say the rest, which is why we calculate all of them.
The part other sign pages leave out
If you are a Libra Sun in Western astrology, your Sun in the Vedic system is probably in Virgo.

Western astrology anchors its zodiac to the seasons; Vedic astrology anchors its to the stars. The two rulers have drifted about 24.2 degrees apart over two thousand years, so if you were born between 23 September and 16 October, your Vedic Sun sits in Virgo, in one of the lunar mansions Uttara Phalguni, Hasta and Chitra. Born 17 October to 23 October, you keep Libra in both systems, in the mansion of . Neither ruler is wrong. They are measuring differently, and any product that shows you only one is choosing tidiness over the whole truth.
Those dates are 2026's. The Sun reaches the sidereal boundary at 14:16 UTC on 17 October, so a birth on that day is settled by the hour and the place, and the split moves by about a day every seventy years as the two zodiacs drift apart.

Questions people ask
Is Libra compatible with my sign?
Sun-sign compatibility is the postcard version: two placements out of the eighty a real pair comparison reads. The traditions also disagree with each other about pairs, which we show rather than hide. The honest answer needs both charts, and the free calculator is where it starts.
What is a Libra Moon or rising?
A Libra Moon reads as the emotional pattern (feelings that need balance and company, and are unsettled by conflict), and Libra rising as the first impression of charm and fairness, and the frame of the whole chart. Same sign, three different jobs. Your own combination is on your free chart.
Which is right, my Western sign or my Vedic one?
Both. They are two internally consistent rulers laid against the same sky, about 24.2 degrees apart. What matters is knowing which one a reading is using, and what each was designed to do well.
We read charts for pattern and coherence, not prediction. Nothing here tells you what will happen, and nothing here tells you who you are; it shows a structure and leaves the judgement with you.
