Virgo rising

The sign on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth: the ascendant in Western astrology, the lagna in Vedic. It changes about every two hours, so it is the placement most sensitive to the birth time, and it is the frame the whole chart is read in.

What the Western tradition says

Western astrology reads a Virgo ascendant as a person who arrives observing: the first impression is of neatness, modesty and a mind already sorting the room, and the body tends to be trim, precise in movement and quick to notice discomfort. Mercury rules the chart, so the whole life is framed as something to be got right.

The honest shadow is the same observation from the other side: a critical eye others feel before they feel the helpfulness, a nervous fastidiousness on first meeting, and a reserve that reads as coldness. The tradition keeps the craft and the worry together.

What the Vedic tradition says of the lagna

Meets things by finding the fault. The eye goes to what is not yet right, which is useful in work and expensive in relationships if it is not put down at the door. That is the sidereal Virgo, which is the rising sign of a different set of people from the tropical one; the section below says which.

The two-hour window

Virgo takes about two and three quarter hours to rise in Britain, the longest of the twelve, which is why Virgo risings are so common there and why the same sign is comparatively rare in the southern hemisphere, where the ascension times reverse.

One sign, two ascendants

If Virgo was rising in your Western chart, Leo was probably rising in your Vedic one.

Wheel showing the tropical ascendant at 15° Virgo and the same horizon at 20°46′ Leo in the sidereal zodiac
The same horizon against both rulers: tropical Virgo 15° rising is sidereal 20°46′ Leo rising.

The ascendant is a degree of the zodiac, the one on the eastern horizon at the minute of birth, and the two zodiacs measure that degree from two starting points about 24.2 degrees apart. So the first 24°14′ of tropical Virgo, which is 81 per cent of the sign, is sidereal Leo; only a birth in the last 5°46′ of the sign, the last 19 per cent of the window, keeps Virgo rising in both. That is the same shift as the sun signs, applied to the clock instead of the calendar, and it is why a Vedic astrologer and a Western one can look at one birth and name two rising signs without either being wrong.

The calculator shows both ascendants to the degree, and flags one that sits within a few degrees of a boundary, where an uncertain birth time would move it.

Questions people ask

How do I find my rising sign?

From the date, the exact time and the place of birth: the ascendant moves about a degree every four minutes, so the time matters more than for anything else in the chart. The calculator gives it in both zodiacs, and an approximate time is handled as two candidate charts rather than a guess.

Is my rising sign more important than my Sun sign?

Western astrology reads the ascendant as the frame and the Sun as the centre, and Vedic astrology reads the lagna as the first house and the Moon before the Sun. Neither tradition has a single most important placement, and a page that names one is simplifying. The free chart shows all three together.

Why does my Vedic chart give a different rising sign?

Because the zodiacs are about 24.2 degrees apart. A tropical Virgo ascendant in the first 24°14′ of the sign is a sidereal Leo ascendant; both are the same horizon, measured from two starting points.
