Pisces

18 February to 20 March. The two fish, swimming in opposite directions and tied together: a water sign that absorbs, ruled by Jupiter in the classical tradition and by Neptune in modern practice. This page is the reference, written plainly, followed by the one thing most sign pages will not tell you.

What the tradition actually says

Western astrology reads a Pisces Sun as an identity organised around what is felt rather than what is stated. Boundaries are thin in both directions, which is where both the perceptiveness and the tiredness come from. The water element gives the depth; the mutable modality gives the fluidity, which is why the tradition describes Pisces as the one who takes the shape of the room. Jupiter's classical rulership adds the breadth of sympathy: the capacity to feel for anyone, which is the gift and the exposure at once.

The honest shadow readings in the classical sources are escape, in whatever form is nearest, a vagueness about facts and money that other people end up paying for, and a tendency to be carried by the strongest current in the room. The two fish pull against each other, and the tradition says the rope between them is the whole story.

Common misreadings

Pisces is not "the weak sign"; the tradition reads a person who endures a great deal precisely because so much gets in, and the last sign of the twelve is described as containing something of all the others. It is not impractical by nature; it works by absorption rather than analysis, and needs the analysis to be done by somebody. And a Sun sign describes what you are consciously building, not the whole person: your Moon, your rising sign and thirty other placements say the rest, which is why we calculate all of them.

The part other sign pages leave out

If you are a Pisces Sun in Western astrology, your Sun in the Vedic system is probably in Aquarius.

The same 5 March Sun against both rulers. Tropical Pisces 15°03′ · sidereal 20°50′ Aquarius.

Western astrology anchors its zodiac to the seasons; Vedic astrology anchors its to the stars. The two rulers have drifted about 24.2 degrees apart over two thousand years, so if you were born between 18 February and 13 March, your Vedic Sun sits in Aquarius, in one of the lunar mansions Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada. Born 14 March to 20 March, you keep Pisces in both systems, in the mansion of Uttara Bhadrapada. Neither ruler is wrong. They are measuring differently, and any product that shows you only one is choosing tidiness over the whole truth.

Those dates are 2026's. The Sun reaches the sidereal boundary at 19:13 UTC on 14 March, so a birth on that day is settled by the hour and the place, and the split moves by about a day every seventy years as the two zodiacs drift apart.

Questions people ask

Is Pisces compatible with my sign?

Sun-sign compatibility is the postcard version: two placements out of the eighty a real pair comparison reads. The traditions also disagree with each other about pairs, which we show rather than hide. The honest answer needs both charts, and the free calculator is where it starts.

What is a Pisces Moon or rising?

A Pisces Moon reads as the emotional pattern (feelings that take in everyone else's and need time alone to sort out which are their own), and Pisces rising as the first impression of gentleness and openness, and the frame of the whole chart. Same sign, three different jobs. Your own combination is on your free chart.

Which is right, my Western sign or my Vedic one?

Both. They are two internally consistent rulers laid against the same sky, about 24.2 degrees apart. What matters is knowing which one a reading is using, and what each was designed to do well.

We read charts for pattern and coherence, not prediction. Nothing here tells you what will happen, and nothing here tells you who you are; it shows a structure and leaves the judgement with you.
