Uttara Bhadrapada

The twenty-sixth of the 27 lunar mansions, the layer of the Vedic sky that Western astrology does not have. Uttara Bhadrapada is the nakshatra of the still deep: its deity is Ahir Budhnya, the serpent that lies at the bottom of the sea, its symbol is the back legs of the funeral cot, and its stars are the other two corners of the Great Square. The name means the latter blessed feet.

What the tradition says

Uttara Bhadrapada's image is of depth that has settled: the serpent coiled at the bottom, wisdom that arrived by staying still rather than by searching. The classical texts read it as patience, self-control, a capacity to be alone without loneliness, and a warmth that is quiet and complete. Saturn rules the mansion, which gives the stillness its discipline; this is peace that was worked for.

The honest shadow in the sources is the serpent that will not surface: a withdrawal that others feel as absence, a slowness that becomes inertia, and an anger that, when it finally rises, rises from a long way down. The texts say Uttara Bhadrapada people must learn that stillness is for others too.

A Uttara Bhadrapada Moon

An Uttara Bhadrapada Moon describes a mind that has settled: feelings held deep and steadily, a real capacity to be alone, and a slowness to anger that makes the anger, when it comes, formidable. Anyone born with the Moon here begins life in a Saturn period, and the sequence of their planetary seasons runs from there.

The four padas

All four of Uttara Bhadrapada's padas fall in sidereal Pisces. The navamsa runs Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio across them; the tradition reads the second, in Virgo, as the most practically wise, and the fourth, in Scorpio, as the deepest and the most private.

In degrees: pada 1 from 3°20′ Pisces to 6°40′ Pisces with a Leo navamsa, pada 2 from 6°40′ Pisces to 10° Pisces with a Virgo navamsa, pada 3 from 10° Pisces to 13°20′ Pisces with a Libra navamsa and pada 4 from 13°20′ Pisces to 16°40′ Pisces with a Scorpio navamsa.

Why your Western chart never mentions this

There is no Western equivalent of Uttara Bhadrapada.

Western astrology divides the sky into twelve signs and stops. The Vedic system lays 27 mansions of 13°20′ over its twelve signs, a finer grain with its own deities, symbols and timing system. There is no Western equivalent of Uttara Bhadrapada, which is why a person can know their "big three" thoroughly and still meet something new the first time their Vedic chart is calculated. It is not that one system is finer-grained and therefore truer; they are answering different questions, and we show you both so you can see where they agree, and where they argue.

The Sun passes through Uttara Bhadrapada from about 18 March to 31 March each year, which Western astrology calls Aries and Pisces. A Moon can be here on any day of the year, since the Moon crosses a mansion in about a day, and it is the Moon the tradition reads first.

Questions people ask

Is Uttara Bhadrapada a good nakshatra?

The tradition does not rank the mansions as good and bad; each carries a capacity and a cost, and Uttara Bhadrapada's are the gift of settled depth and the tax of withdrawal. Readings that call nakshatras lucky or unlucky are selling something.

What if my Moon is at the edge of Uttara Bhadrapada?

Then your pada matters more than usual, and your birth time matters more than usual, since the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and crosses from Purva Bhadrapada into Uttara Bhadrapada and on into Revati within two. The calculator shows your exact degree and flags it when a placement sits near an edge.

I am a Pisces in Western astrology. Is Uttara Bhadrapada the same thing?

No. Your Western sign comes from the tropical zodiac; Uttara Bhadrapada is a sidereal mansion that lies inside sidereal Pisces. You can be a Western Pisces with no Uttara Bhadrapada placements at all, and a Western Aries with a Uttara Bhadrapada Moon. The free chart shows your actual pair.
