Purva Bhadrapada
The twenty-fifth of the 27 lunar mansions, the layer of the Vedic sky that Western astrology does not have. Purva Bhadrapada is the nakshatra of the far end of things: its deity is Aja Ekapada, the one-footed goat, a form of the fire that rises from the deep, its symbol is the front legs of a funeral cot, and its stars are two corners of the Great Square of Pegasus. The name means the former blessed feet.

What the tradition says
Purva Bhadrapada's image is of intensity that faces what others avoid: the fire of transformation, the cot that carries the body, the sword that cuts the tie. The classical texts read it as passion, unconventional depth, a philosophical courage about the far edge of life, and a capacity for sacrifice. Jupiter rules the mansion, which gives the intensity its meaning; this is fierceness in the service of a conviction.
The honest shadow in the sources is the fire out of control: fanaticism, a cynicism that follows disillusion, and a darkness the texts do not soften. The texts say Purva Bhadrapada people must learn that the fire is for warming as well as for burning.
A Purva Bhadrapada Moon
A Purva Bhadrapada Moon describes a mind that lives at the edge: feelings that are intense, idealistic and sometimes frightening to their owner, a seriousness about ultimate questions, and a tenderness that is fiercely guarded. Anyone born with the Moon here begins life in a Jupiter period, and the sequence of their planetary seasons runs from there.
The four padas
Purva Bhadrapada crosses a sign boundary: its first three padas fall in sidereal Aquarius and the fourth in Pisces. The tradition reads the Aquarius padas as conviction turned outward, towards causes and ideas, and the fourth pada, in Pisces with a Cancer navamsa, as the most spiritual and the most exposed. Two Purva Bhadrapada Moons either side of that line share the fire and differ in whether it burns for the world or for the soul.
In degrees: pada 1 from 20° Aquarius to 23°20′ Aquarius with a Aries navamsa, pada 2 from 23°20′ Aquarius to 26°40′ Aquarius with a Taurus navamsa, pada 3 from 26°40′ Aquarius to 0° Pisces with a Gemini navamsa and pada 4 from 0° Pisces to 3°20′ Pisces with a Cancer navamsa.
Why your Western chart never mentions this
There is no Western equivalent of Purva Bhadrapada.
Western astrology divides the sky into twelve signs and stops. The Vedic system lays 27 mansions of 13°20′ over its twelve signs, a finer grain with its own deities, symbols and timing system. There is no Western equivalent of Purva Bhadrapada, which is why a person can know their "big three" thoroughly and still meet something new the first time their Vedic chart is calculated. It is not that one system is finer-grained and therefore truer; they are answering different questions, and we show you both so you can see where they agree, and where they argue.
The Sun passes through Purva Bhadrapada from about 4 March to 18 March each year, which Western astrology calls Pisces. A Moon can be here on any day of the year, since the Moon crosses a mansion in about a day, and it is the Moon the tradition reads first.

Questions people ask
Is Purva Bhadrapada a good nakshatra?
The tradition does not rank the mansions as good and bad; each carries a capacity and a cost, and Purva Bhadrapada's are the gift of facing the far end and the tax of the fire. Readings that call nakshatras lucky or unlucky are selling something.
What if my Moon is right on the Aquarius to Pisces boundary?
Then your pada matters more than usual, and your birth time matters more than usual, since the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day. The calculator shows your exact degree and flags it when a placement sits near an edge.
I am a Aquarius in Western astrology. Is Purva Bhadrapada the same thing?
No. Your Western sign comes from the tropical zodiac; Purva Bhadrapada is a sidereal mansion that partly overlaps sidereal Aquarius. You can be a Western Aquarius with no Purva Bhadrapada placements at all, and a Western Pisces with a Purva Bhadrapada Moon. The free chart shows your actual pair.
