Taurus
20 April to 21 May. The bull: an earth sign that holds things steady, ruled by Venus, the planet the tradition associates with pleasure, value and what is worth keeping. This page is the reference, written plainly, followed by the one thing most sign pages will not tell you.
What the tradition actually says
Western astrology reads a Taurus Sun as an identity organised around holding: steadiness, physical comfort, and the slow accumulation of something solid. The earth element gives the sense of the material world, what things weigh and cost and feel like; the fixed modality gives persistence, which is why the tradition describes Taurus as the one who stays when the others have moved on. Venus's rulership adds the appetite for what is pleasant: good food, good cloth, a garden, a room arranged properly.
The honest shadow readings in the classical sources are stubbornness that is proud of itself, a resistance to change that can outlast the reasons for it, and a possessiveness that reaches from objects to people. The tradition does not pretend the strength and the shadow are different things: what holds on is what will not let go.
Common misreadings
Taurus is not "lazy"; the tradition's reading is that it works at one pace and does not change that pace for anybody, which reads as reliable from outside and immovable from close up. It is not only about money; the second house is about value, and money is one of the things valued. And a Sun sign describes what you are consciously building, not the whole person: your Moon, your rising sign and thirty other placements say the rest, which is why we calculate all of them.
The part other sign pages leave out
If you are a Taurus Sun in Western astrology, your Sun in the Vedic system is probably in Aries.

Western astrology anchors its zodiac to the seasons; Vedic astrology anchors its to the stars. The two rulers have drifted about 24.2 degrees apart over two thousand years, so if you were born between 20 April and 14 May, your Vedic Sun sits in Aries, in one of the lunar mansions Ashwini, Bharani and Krittika. Born 15 May to 21 May, you keep Taurus in both systems, in the mansion of . Neither ruler is wrong. They are measuring differently, and any product that shows you only one is choosing tidiness over the whole truth.
Those dates are 2026's. The Sun reaches the sidereal boundary at 00:31 UTC on 15 May, so a birth on that day is settled by the hour and the place, and the split moves by about a day every seventy years as the two zodiacs drift apart.

Questions people ask
Is Taurus compatible with my sign?
Sun-sign compatibility is the postcard version: two placements out of the eighty a real pair comparison reads. The traditions also disagree with each other about pairs, which we show rather than hide. The honest answer needs both charts, and the free calculator is where it starts.
What is a Taurus Moon or rising?
A Taurus Moon reads as the emotional pattern (feelings that settle slowly and need comfort, routine and touch), and Taurus rising as the first impression of calm and solidity, and the frame of the whole chart. Same sign, three different jobs. Your own combination is on your free chart.
Which is right, my Western sign or my Vedic one?
Both. They are two internally consistent rulers laid against the same sky, about 24.2 degrees apart. What matters is knowing which one a reading is using, and what each was designed to do well.
We read charts for pattern and coherence, not prediction. Nothing here tells you what will happen, and nothing here tells you who you are; it shows a structure and leaves the judgement with you.
