Ashwini
The first of the 27 lunar mansions, the layer of the Vedic sky that Western astrology does not have. Ashwini is the nakshatra of the first move: its deities are the twin horsemen who heal, its symbol is a horse's head, and its stars are the two brightest in the Ram. The name means born of a horse.

What the tradition says
Ashwini's image is of speed put to use: the horse that arrives first, and the physicians who arrive in time. The classical texts read it as quickness of body and decision, a talent for beginnings, and an instinct to help that moves before it has been asked. Ketu rules the mansion, which gives the speed its strangeness; this is quickness that does not always know where it came from.
The honest shadow in the sources is the cost of the same speed: impatience with anything slow, a restlessness that starts the next thing before the last is finished, and a directness that can trample. The texts say Ashwini people must learn that arriving first is not the same as arriving well.
A Ashwini Moon
The Moon is the placement Vedic astrology reads first, so an Ashwini Moon matters more than an Ashwini Sun. It describes a mind that starts: thoughts that arrive fast and want acting on, comfort found in motion, and a real difficulty with waiting. Because the birth nakshatra sets the dasha clock, anyone born with the Moon here begins life in a Ketu period, and the sequence of their planetary seasons runs from there.
The four padas
Each nakshatra divides into four padas of 3°20′. All four of Ashwini's fall in sidereal Aries, so the sign does not change across the mansion; what changes is the navamsa, the ninth part, which runs Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer across the four. The tradition reads the first pada as the purest expression of the speed and the fourth as the one most likely to turn it towards care of others.
In degrees: pada 1 from 0° Aries to 3°20′ Aries with a Aries navamsa, pada 2 from 3°20′ Aries to 6°40′ Aries with a Taurus navamsa, pada 3 from 6°40′ Aries to 10° Aries with a Gemini navamsa and pada 4 from 10° Aries to 13°20′ Aries with a Cancer navamsa.
Why your Western chart never mentions this
There is no Western equivalent of Ashwini.
Western astrology divides the sky into twelve signs and stops. The Vedic system lays 27 mansions of 13°20′ over its twelve signs, a finer grain with its own deities, symbols and timing system. There is no Western equivalent of Ashwini, which is why a person can know their "big three" thoroughly and still meet something new the first time their Vedic chart is calculated. It is not that one system is finer-grained and therefore truer; they are answering different questions, and we show you both so you can see where they agree, and where they argue.
The Sun passes through Ashwini from about 14 April to 27 April each year, which Western astrology calls Aries and Taurus. A Moon can be here on any day of the year, since the Moon crosses a mansion in about a day, and it is the Moon the tradition reads first.

Questions people ask
Is Ashwini a good nakshatra?
The tradition does not rank the mansions as good and bad; each carries a capacity and a cost, and Ashwini's are the gift of the first move and the tax of impatience. Readings that call nakshatras lucky or unlucky are selling something.
What if my Moon is at the edge of Ashwini?
Then your pada matters more than usual, and your birth time matters more than usual, since the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and crosses from Revati into Ashwini and on into Bharani within two. The calculator shows your exact degree and flags it when a placement sits near an edge.
I am a Aries in Western astrology. Is Ashwini the same thing?
No. Your Western sign comes from the tropical zodiac; Ashwini is a sidereal mansion that lies inside sidereal Aries. You can be a Western Aries with no Ashwini placements at all, and a Western Taurus with a Ashwini Moon. The free chart shows your actual pair.
