Bharani

The second of the 27 lunar mansions, the layer of the Vedic sky that Western astrology does not have. Bharani is the nakshatra of what must be carried through: its deity is Yama, who keeps the law of endings, its symbol is the yoni, and its stars are a small triangle in the Ram. The name means the bearer.

What the tradition says

Bharani's image is of bearing: carrying a thing to term, whether a child, a task or a grief, and not putting it down early. The classical texts read it as endurance, a tolerance for what others would rather not look at, and a creative force that is closer to labour than to inspiration. Venus rules the mansion, which gives the bearing its warmth; this is duty done with feeling rather than duty done cold.

The honest shadow in the sources is extremity: intensity that burns through the people around it, a judging streak that comes with Yama's law, and a hunger for experience that does not always ask what it costs. The texts say Bharani people must learn to carry without being consumed.

A Bharani Moon

A Bharani Moon describes a mind that holds: feelings carried at full weight, a capacity for the heavy end of life that others lean on, and a difficulty putting anything down. Anyone born with the Moon here begins life in a Venus period, the longest of the nine, and the sequence of their planetary seasons runs from there.

The four padas

All four of Bharani's padas fall in sidereal Aries. The navamsa runs Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio across them, and the tradition reads the first as the most self-assured, the middle two as the most turned towards work and partnership, and the fourth as the one where Yama's severity is felt most.

In degrees: pada 1 from 13°20′ Aries to 16°40′ Aries with a Leo navamsa, pada 2 from 16°40′ Aries to 20° Aries with a Virgo navamsa, pada 3 from 20° Aries to 23°20′ Aries with a Libra navamsa and pada 4 from 23°20′ Aries to 26°40′ Aries with a Scorpio navamsa.

Why your Western chart never mentions this

There is no Western equivalent of Bharani.

Western astrology divides the sky into twelve signs and stops. The Vedic system lays 27 mansions of 13°20′ over its twelve signs, a finer grain with its own deities, symbols and timing system. There is no Western equivalent of Bharani, which is why a person can know their "big three" thoroughly and still meet something new the first time their Vedic chart is calculated. It is not that one system is finer-grained and therefore truer; they are answering different questions, and we show you both so you can see where they agree, and where they argue.

The Sun passes through Bharani from about 27 April to 11 May each year, which Western astrology calls Taurus. A Moon can be here on any day of the year, since the Moon crosses a mansion in about a day, and it is the Moon the tradition reads first.

Questions people ask

Is Bharani a good nakshatra?

The tradition does not rank the mansions as good and bad; each carries a capacity and a cost, and Bharani's are the gift of carrying things through and the tax of intensity. Readings that call nakshatras lucky or unlucky are selling something.

What if my Moon is at the edge of Bharani?

Then your pada matters more than usual, and your birth time matters more than usual, since the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and crosses from Ashwini into Bharani and on into Krittika within two. The calculator shows your exact degree and flags it when a placement sits near an edge.

I am a Aries in Western astrology. Is Bharani the same thing?

No. Your Western sign comes from the tropical zodiac; Bharani is a sidereal mansion that lies inside sidereal Aries. You can be a Western Aries with no Bharani placements at all, and a Western Taurus with a Bharani Moon. The free chart shows your actual pair.
