8 Mountain
Eight Earth, the star of the northeast and of late winter: the trigram Gen, the mountain. This page is the reference for the eighth of the nine, the star the tradition reads as the youngest son.
What the tradition says
Nine Star Ki reads Eight Earth as the mountain that does not move for anyone: self-contained, determined, thoughtful and slow to change course, accumulating knowledge, skill and resources over years. The tradition associates it with depth over breadth, long study before expertise is claimed, and a loyalty that does not waver once given. Its element is Earth, its direction northeast, its season the end of winter, and its trigram Gen, keeping still, which the I Ching reads as the stillness before movement.
The honest shadow is stubbornness and isolation: good advice refused, too long spent in one's own head, and a wall that others cannot get past. The tradition says Eight Earth is at its best with a long project, real autonomy and one or two people it fully trusts, and that reaching it takes patience.
The three positions
As a principal star, the self people deal with: The Mountain does not move for anyone. You are self-contained, determined, thoughtful and slow to change course. You accumulate: knowledge, skills, resources, experience. You prefer depth to breadth and will study something for years before you feel expert. The risk is stubbornness and isolation: refusing good advice, staying too long in your own head, and being hard for others to reach. You are at your best with a long project, real autonomy and one or two people you fully trust.
As a character star, what runs underneath: Emotionally, you are private, steady and slow to open. You do not fall in love or in friendship quickly, but once you do it tends to last for life. You process feelings by going quiet and working things out alone. You dislike being rushed and resent being pushed. You need patience from the people close to you, and you reward it with a loyalty that does not waver.
As a surface star, the first impression: People meet you as reserved, grounded and hard to read. You seem older than you are. Under pressure you go immovable: you stop, plant your feet and refuse to be hurried. It looks calm and can feel like a wall to others. Your first-impression strength is that people sense you will not let them down.

In Vedic astrology your periods are your own: they run from the Moon's degree at your birth and nobody else's clock matches. In Nine Star Ki the cycle is the world's: the year star descends by one at every Li Chun, so the whole population of 8 Mountains moves from house 3 to house 4 together on or about 4 February 2027. The tradition reads the house as the weather of the year and says the weather is the same for everyone with the same star, which is a claim the other nine systems here never make. We show it beside them and do not count the shared turning as a finding about you; what is yours is which house your star is in.
The star itself comes from the year of birth alone, so it needs neither a time nor a place, and a January birth belongs to the year before, since the Ki year turns at Li Chun.

1974, 1983, 1992, 2001, 2010, 2019, 2028 and 2037, each from Li Chun, around 4 February, to the next. The stars run backwards through the years, nine to one, so the same star returns every ninth year.
