What the tradition says
Nine Star Ki reads Seven Metal as the lake that reflects the sky and gathers people around it: charming, articulate, playful and quick-witted, with a gift for making life pleasant. The tradition associates it with beauty, good company and good conversation, and notes that money and opportunity tend to find it. Its element is Metal, its direction west, its season the harvest, and its trigram Dui, the joyous, which the I Ching reads as pleasure shared.
The honest shadow is superficiality and indulgence: depth avoided, spending to feel good, and comfort chosen over growth. The tradition says Seven Metal thrives in people-facing roles and with friends who challenge it as well as enjoy it, and that underneath the wit there is often a sadness it does not show.
The three positions
As a principal star, the self people deal with: The Lake reflects the sky and gathers people around it. You are charming, articulate, playful and quick-witted, with a gift for making life pleasant. You enjoy beauty, good company and good conversation, and you are often the one who lightens a heavy room. Money and opportunity tend to find you. The risk is superficiality and self-indulgence: avoiding depth, spending to feel good, and choosing comfort over growth. You thrive in people-facing roles and with friends who challenge you as well as enjoy you.
As a character star, what runs underneath: Inside, you are sociable and pleasure-seeking, with a strong need to be liked. You feel loneliness acutely and will fill silence with company. Beneath the wit there is often a sadness you do not show. You need fun, affection and a little indulgence to feel yourself. In close relationships you are attentive and generous, and you can sulk when you feel unappreciated.

In Vedic astrology your periods are your own: they run from the Moon's degree at your birth and nobody else's clock matches. In Nine Star Ki the cycle is the world's: the year star descends by one at every Li Chun, so the whole population of 7 Lakes moves from house 2 to house 3 together on or about 4 February 2027. The tradition reads the house as the weather of the year and says the weather is the same for everyone with the same star, which is a claim the other nine systems here never make. We show it beside them and do not count the shared turning as a finding about you; what is yours is which house your star is in.
The star itself comes from the year of birth alone, so it needs neither a time nor a place, and a January birth belongs to the year before, since the Ki year turns at Li Chun.
