9 Fire
Nine Fire, the star of the south and of midsummer: the trigram Li, fire. This page is the reference for the ninth and last of the nine, the star the tradition reads as the middle daughter.
What the tradition says
Nine Star Ki reads Nine Fire as the fire that lights up everything around it: expressive, passionate, intelligent and drawn to the spotlight, communicating vividly and noticing everything. The tradition associates it with visibility, brilliance, a care for how things look and feel, and the capacity to be the most seen person in any group. Its element is Fire, its direction south, its season midsummer, and its trigram Li, the clinging, which the I Ching reads as brightness that depends on what it burns.
The honest shadow is burnout and vanity: flaring brightly and collapsing, needing applause, and reacting to criticism as if it were an attack. The tradition says Nine Fire thrives with a stage, a cause and enough rest to sustain the brightness, and that a Nine Fire year is the most visible of the nine for everybody, with everything that visibility brings.
The three positions
As a principal star, the self people deal with: Fire lights up everything around it. You are expressive, passionate, intelligent and drawn to the spotlight. You communicate vividly, notice everything and care deeply about how things look and feel. You are often the most visible person in any group. The risk is burnout and vanity: flaring brightly then collapsing, needing applause, and reacting to criticism as if it were an attack. You thrive with a stage, a cause and enough rest to sustain the brightness.

In Vedic astrology your periods are your own: they run from the Moon's degree at your birth and nobody else's clock matches. In Nine Star Ki the cycle is the world's: the year star descends by one at every Li Chun, so the whole population of 9 Fires moves from house 4 to house 5 together on or about 4 February 2027. The tradition reads the house as the weather of the year and says the weather is the same for everyone with the same star, which is a claim the other nine systems here never make. We show it beside them and do not count the shared turning as a finding about you; what is yours is which house your star is in.
The star itself comes from the year of birth alone, so it needs neither a time nor a place, and a January birth belongs to the year before, since the Ki year turns at Li Chun.
