Lunar authority
The authority of a Reflector, with no defined centres: the Moon's cycle. This page is the reference for the one authority that is not in the chart at all, but in the sky moving over it.
What the tradition says
Human Design reads lunar authority as a decision made across twenty-eight days: with no centre defined, a Reflector has no consistent inner voice, and what is consistent instead is the Moon, which crosses every gate of the open chart in a cycle and lights each one in turn. The tradition's instruction is to wait the cycle out on anything that matters, to talk it over with different people as the Moon moves, and to notice how the decision looks from each position. What holds across the whole cycle is the answer.
The honest shadow is the decision forced early: a Reflector pressed to answer by people who do not know what they are asking, and a life of choices made on somebody else's timetable. The tradition says a Reflector who is rushed is a Reflector who is disappointed, and it reads disappointment as the sign that the cycle was not honoured.
How the chart gives lunar authority
With nothing defined, clarity is a matter of time rather than of feeling. A full lunar cycle, about twenty eight days, lets a decision be sampled from every angle the sky provides. Anything urgent is worth resisting on principle, because the urgency is almost always someone else's.
On an ordinary day
Lunar authority on an ordinary day is patient by design: the question is held, not answered, and the tradition asks for it to be spoken to different people at different points of the month. Twenty-eight days is a long time in a world that wants an answer by Friday, and the tradition does not pretend otherwise.
What Western astrology cannot see: a decision mechanism
A Western chart cannot say whether you decide in the moment or over a wave. Lunar authority says exactly that.
Western astrology has no type and no authority: nothing in a natal chart says wait to respond or inform before you act, because the tradition reads placements as qualities rather than as mechanics. Human Design takes the same moment of birth, and a second moment about eighty-eight days before it, and reads the sixty-four gates as wiring, so that a type is a type by the shape of the circuit rather than by any planet's meaning. That is why a person can have a Western chart full of fire and be built to wait. We show both, and where the strategy and the Sun sign pull in different directions we say so rather than choosing.
The mechanism is only as good as the birth time: the design side of the chart moves with it, and a defined centre can open with an hour's change. The calculator says which gates and channels carry the definition, and flags a chart that sits near a boundary.

Questions people ask
Who has lunar authority?
A Reflector, with no defined centres. The tradition ranks the centres, and the highest defined one on the list decides; lunar authority is seventh of seven.
Can I have two authorities?
No. One centre decides, by rank: a defined Solar Plexus outranks everything below it, which is why nearly half of all charts are emotional, and lunar authority applies only when the centres above it on the list are open.
Can my authority change?
No. It is fixed by the birth chart. What changes is whether it is followed, and the tradition reads the not-self theme of your type as the sign that it is not.
We read charts for pattern and coherence, not prediction. Nothing here tells you what will happen, and nothing here tells you who you are; it shows a structure and leaves the judgement with you.
