Mental projected authority

The authority of a Projector with only the Ajna or Head defined, or the Ajna to the Throat: the environment. This page is the reference for the authority the tradition calls outer, because the decision is made by where and with whom it is discussed.

What the tradition says

Human Design reads mental projected authority as a decision found through the environment: with no motor, no Spleen, no Sacral and no Solar Plexus defined, there is nothing in the body to decide with, and the tradition holds that the mind is not an authority either. What decides is the right place and the right people, talked through over time, until the person's own mind, hearing itself in the right surroundings, arrives at clarity. It belongs to a small share of Projectors.

The honest shadow is the mind deciding alone: a clever plan made in the wrong room, a certainty that is really somebody else's, and a life run by the head the tradition says was never meant to steer. The tradition reads the mental projector's environment as decisive, and says the wrong environment makes every decision wrong.

How the chart gives mental projected authority

No motor and no inner authority, so the decision does not sit in the body at all. It sits in the environment. This one needs to think out loud with trusted people, in the right place, and what is being tracked is not their advice but what becomes clear while speaking. Where you are matters as much as who you ask.

On an ordinary day

Mental projected authority on an ordinary day is a matter of place and company: the same question asked in the right kitchen with the right friend comes out differently, and the tradition says the difference is the answer. It asks for time, for several conversations, and for attention to how the body feels in each place they happen.

What Western astrology cannot see: a decision mechanism

A Western chart cannot say whether you decide in the moment or over a wave. Mental projected authority says exactly that.

Western astrology has no type and no authority: nothing in a natal chart says wait to respond or inform before you act, because the tradition reads placements as qualities rather than as mechanics. Human Design takes the same moment of birth, and a second moment about eighty-eight days before it, and reads the sixty-four gates as wiring, so that a type is a type by the shape of the circuit rather than by any planet's meaning. That is why a person can have a Western chart full of fire and be built to wait. We show both, and where the strategy and the Sun sign pull in different directions we say so rather than choosing.

The mechanism is only as good as the birth time: the design side of the chart moves with it, and a defined centre can open with an hour's change. The calculator says which gates and channels carry the definition, and flags a chart that sits near a boundary.

Questions people ask

Who has mental projected authority?

A Projector with only the Ajna or Head defined, or Ajna to Throat. The tradition ranks the centres, and the highest defined one on the list decides; mental projected authority is sixth of seven.

Can I have two authorities?

No. One centre decides, by rank: a defined Solar Plexus outranks everything below it, which is why nearly half of all charts are emotional, and mental projected authority applies only when the centres above it on the list are open.

Can my authority change?

No. It is fixed by the birth chart. What changes is whether it is followed, and the tradition reads the not-self theme of your type as the sign that it is not.

We read charts for pattern and coherence, not prediction. Nothing here tells you what will happen, and nothing here tells you who you are; it shows a structure and leaves the judgement with you.
