Capricorn

21 December to 20 January. The sea goat: an earth sign that builds what lasts, ruled by Saturn, the planet the tradition associates with time, limits and structure. This page is the reference, written plainly, followed by the one thing most sign pages will not tell you.

What the tradition actually says

Western astrology reads a Capricorn Sun as an identity organised around building something that lasts. Long horizons, real patience, and a willingness to be uncomfortable now for a result later. The earth element gives the practical measure of what a thing costs; the cardinal modality gives the drive to begin the climb, which is why the tradition describes Capricorn as the one who arrives late and stays. Saturn's rulership adds the respect for limits: authority is earned rather than claimed, and it takes time.

The honest shadow readings in the classical sources are a seriousness that forgets how to stop, an ambition that can measure people by their use, and a fear of failure that reads from outside as coldness. The tradition's Saturn is a hard teacher, and the sign carries the lessons and the bruises together.

Common misreadings

Capricorn is not "the boring sign"; the classical image is a goat with a fish's tail, a creature at home on the mountain and in the deep, and the dry humour is well documented. It is not only about career; the tenth house is about standing in the world, which a parent or a craftsman holds as surely as a director. And a Sun sign describes what you are consciously building, not the whole person: your Moon, your rising sign and thirty other placements say the rest, which is why we calculate all of them.

The part other sign pages leave out

If you are a Capricorn Sun in Western astrology, your Sun in the Vedic system is probably in Sagittarius.

The same 5 January Sun against both rulers. Tropical Capricorn 15° · sidereal 20°46′ Sagittarius.

Western astrology anchors its zodiac to the seasons; Vedic astrology anchors its to the stars. The two rulers have drifted about 24.2 degrees apart over two thousand years, so if you were born between 21 December and 13 January, your Vedic Sun sits in Sagittarius, in one of the lunar mansions Mula, Purva Ashadha and Uttara Ashadha. Born 14 January to 20 January, you keep Capricorn in both systems, in the mansion of . Neither ruler is wrong. They are measuring differently, and any product that shows you only one is choosing tidiness over the whole truth.

Those dates are 2026's. The Sun reaches the sidereal boundary at 15:30 UTC on 14 January, so a birth on that day is settled by the hour and the place, and the split moves by about a day every seventy years as the two zodiacs drift apart.

Questions people ask

Is Capricorn compatible with my sign?

Sun-sign compatibility is the postcard version: two placements out of the eighty a real pair comparison reads. The traditions also disagree with each other about pairs, which we show rather than hide. The honest answer needs both charts, and the free calculator is where it starts.

What is a Capricorn Moon or rising?

A Capricorn Moon reads as the emotional pattern (feelings that are managed rather than shown, and that ask for help late), and Capricorn rising as the first impression of composure and seriousness, and the frame of the whole chart. Same sign, three different jobs. Your own combination is on your free chart.

Which is right, my Western sign or my Vedic one?

Both. They are two internally consistent rulers laid against the same sky, about 24.2 degrees apart. What matters is knowing which one a reading is using, and what each was designed to do well.

We read charts for pattern and coherence, not prediction. Nothing here tells you what will happen, and nothing here tells you who you are; it shows a structure and leaves the judgement with you.
