Purva Ashadha

The twentieth of the 27 lunar mansions, the layer of the Vedic sky that Western astrology does not have. Purva Ashadha is the nakshatra of the unconquered: its deity is Apas, the waters that wear down whatever stands in them, its symbol is the fan that separates grain from chaff, and its stars are in the bow of the Archer. The name means the earlier of the two unconquered ones.

What the tradition says

Purva Ashadha's image is of water's persuasion: not force, but a pressure that does not stop until the thing has moved. The classical texts read it as confidence, eloquence, an invincibility in argument, and a talent for purification, the fan that keeps what is good and lets the rest blow away. Venus rules the mansion, which gives the persuasion its charm; this is winning people over rather than winning against them.

The honest shadow in the sources is the confidence that will not be corrected: an early certainty not much dented by evidence, a pride in never conceding, and an overreach that the waters can bring. The texts say Purva Ashadha people must learn that being unconquered is not the same as being right.

A Purva Ashadha Moon

A Purva Ashadha Moon describes a mind that is sure: feelings that are buoyant and persuasive, a dislike of being contradicted, and a real generosity once the point has been won. Anyone born with the Moon here begins life in a Venus period, and the sequence of their planetary seasons runs from there.

The four padas

All four of Purva Ashadha's padas fall in sidereal Sagittarius. The navamsa runs Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio across them; the tradition reads the first, in Leo, as the most confident, the third, in Libra, as the most persuasive, and the fourth as the one where the certainty is most fiercely held.

In degrees: pada 1 from 13°20′ Sagittarius to 16°40′ Sagittarius with a Leo navamsa, pada 2 from 16°40′ Sagittarius to 20° Sagittarius with a Virgo navamsa, pada 3 from 20° Sagittarius to 23°20′ Sagittarius with a Libra navamsa and pada 4 from 23°20′ Sagittarius to 26°40′ Sagittarius with a Scorpio navamsa.

Why your Western chart never mentions this

There is no Western equivalent of Purva Ashadha.

Western astrology divides the sky into twelve signs and stops. The Vedic system lays 27 mansions of 13°20′ over its twelve signs, a finer grain with its own deities, symbols and timing system. There is no Western equivalent of Purva Ashadha, which is why a person can know their "big three" thoroughly and still meet something new the first time their Vedic chart is calculated. It is not that one system is finer-grained and therefore truer; they are answering different questions, and we show you both so you can see where they agree, and where they argue.

The Sun passes through Purva Ashadha from about 29 December to 11 January each year, which Western astrology calls Capricorn. A Moon can be here on any day of the year, since the Moon crosses a mansion in about a day, and it is the Moon the tradition reads first.

Questions people ask

Is Purva Ashadha a good nakshatra?

The tradition does not rank the mansions as good and bad; each carries a capacity and a cost, and Purva Ashadha's are the gift of persuasion and the tax of not conceding. Readings that call nakshatras lucky or unlucky are selling something.

What if my Moon is at the edge of Purva Ashadha?

Then your pada matters more than usual, and your birth time matters more than usual, since the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and crosses from Mula into Purva Ashadha and on into Uttara Ashadha within two. The calculator shows your exact degree and flags it when a placement sits near an edge.

I am a Sagittarius in Western astrology. Is Purva Ashadha the same thing?

No. Your Western sign comes from the tropical zodiac; Purva Ashadha is a sidereal mansion that lies inside sidereal Sagittarius. You can be a Western Sagittarius with no Purva Ashadha placements at all, and a Western Capricorn with a Purva Ashadha Moon. The free chart shows your actual pair.
