Cancer
21 June to 22 July. The crab: a water sign that protects what it holds, ruled by the Moon, the body the tradition associates with feeling, memory and home. This page is the reference, written plainly, followed by the one thing most sign pages will not tell you.
What the tradition actually says
Western astrology reads a Cancer Sun as an identity organised around belonging. What is being protected matters more than what is being achieved, and the work is usually done on behalf of somebody. The water element gives the feeling life its depth; the cardinal modality gives the drive to act on it, which is why the tradition describes Cancer as the one who builds the house rather than the one who merely lives in it. The Moon's rulership adds the tides: moods that come and go on their own clock, and a memory that keeps everything.
The honest shadow readings in the classical sources are a defensiveness that treats every question as an attack, moods that the rest of the household has to navigate, and a way of caring that can become a way of controlling. The shell and the claws are both in the image; the tradition does not leave the claws out.
Common misreadings
Cancer is not "the weepy sign"; the tradition reads a person who feels a great deal and shows a small part of it, and who is far tougher than the softness suggests. Retreat is part of the cycle rather than a failure of nerve. And a Sun sign describes what you are consciously building, not the whole person: your Moon, your rising sign and thirty other placements say the rest, which is why we calculate all of them.
The part other sign pages leave out
If you are a Cancer Sun in Western astrology, your Sun in the Vedic system is probably in Gemini.

Western astrology anchors its zodiac to the seasons; Vedic astrology anchors its to the stars. The two rulers have drifted about 24.2 degrees apart over two thousand years, so if you were born between 21 June and 15 July, your Vedic Sun sits in Gemini, in one of the lunar mansions Mrigashira, Ardra and Punarvasu. Born 16 July to 22 July, you keep Cancer in both systems, in the mansion of Pushya. Neither ruler is wrong. They are measuring differently, and any product that shows you only one is choosing tidiness over the whole truth.
Those dates are 2026's. The Sun reaches the sidereal boundary at 17:57 UTC on 16 July, so a birth on that day is settled by the hour and the place, and the split moves by about a day every seventy years as the two zodiacs drift apart.

Questions people ask
Is Cancer compatible with my sign?
Sun-sign compatibility is the postcard version: two placements out of the eighty a real pair comparison reads. The traditions also disagree with each other about pairs, which we show rather than hide. The honest answer needs both charts, and the free calculator is where it starts.
What is a Cancer Moon or rising?
A Cancer Moon reads as the emotional pattern (feelings that run deep, remember everything and need a safe place to be shown), and Cancer rising as the first impression of care and reserve, and the frame of the whole chart. Same sign, three different jobs. Your own combination is on your free chart.
Which is right, my Western sign or my Vedic one?
Both. They are two internally consistent rulers laid against the same sky, about 24.2 degrees apart. What matters is knowing which one a reading is using, and what each was designed to do well.
We read charts for pattern and coherence, not prediction. Nothing here tells you what will happen, and nothing here tells you who you are; it shows a structure and leaves the judgement with you.
