Ardra

The sixth of the 27 lunar mansions, the layer of the Vedic sky that Western astrology does not have. Ardra is the nakshatra of the storm: its deity is Rudra, the howler, an early form of Shiva, its symbol is a teardrop, and its star is Betelgeuse, the red shoulder of Orion. The name means the moist one.

What the tradition says

Ardra's image is of weather that clears the air: the storm that breaks the heat, the tears that come before the calm. The classical texts read it as intensity of feeling and of mind, a capacity for upheaval, and a sharpness of intellect that comes out of struggle rather than in spite of it. Rahu rules the mansion, which gives the storm its appetite; this is a hunger to understand that is not satisfied by easy answers.

The honest shadow in the sources is destruction for its own sake: a turbulence the people nearby have to weather, a cynicism that arrives after too many storms, and an anger that is Rudra's own. The texts say Ardra people must learn that the storm is for clearing, not for its own noise.

A Ardra Moon

An Ardra Moon describes a mind that lives through weather: feelings that build, break and clear, a real depth of thought that is reached by way of turmoil, and a tenderness under the storm that few are shown. Anyone born with the Moon here begins life in a Rahu period, the most unsettled of the nine, and the sequence of their planetary seasons runs from there.

The four padas

All four of Ardra's padas fall in sidereal Gemini. The navamsa runs Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces across them; the tradition reads the first as the most searching, the second as the most disciplined, and the fourth, in Pisces, as the one where the teardrop is felt most fully.

In degrees: pada 1 from 6°40′ Gemini to 10° Gemini with a Sagittarius navamsa, pada 2 from 10° Gemini to 13°20′ Gemini with a Capricorn navamsa, pada 3 from 13°20′ Gemini to 16°40′ Gemini with a Aquarius navamsa and pada 4 from 16°40′ Gemini to 20° Gemini with a Pisces navamsa.

Why your Western chart never mentions this

There is no Western equivalent of Ardra.

Western astrology divides the sky into twelve signs and stops. The Vedic system lays 27 mansions of 13°20′ over its twelve signs, a finer grain with its own deities, symbols and timing system. There is no Western equivalent of Ardra, which is why a person can know their "big three" thoroughly and still meet something new the first time their Vedic chart is calculated. It is not that one system is finer-grained and therefore truer; they are answering different questions, and we show you both so you can see where they agree, and where they argue.

The Sun passes through Ardra from about 22 June to 6 July each year, which Western astrology calls Cancer. A Moon can be here on any day of the year, since the Moon crosses a mansion in about a day, and it is the Moon the tradition reads first.

Questions people ask

Is Ardra a good nakshatra?

The tradition does not rank the mansions as good and bad; each carries a capacity and a cost, and Ardra's are the gift of clarity after the storm and the tax of the storm itself. Readings that call nakshatras lucky or unlucky are selling something.

What if my Moon is at the edge of Ardra?

Then your pada matters more than usual, and your birth time matters more than usual, since the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and crosses from Mrigashira into Ardra and on into Punarvasu within two. The calculator shows your exact degree and flags it when a placement sits near an edge.

I am a Gemini in Western astrology. Is Ardra the same thing?

No. Your Western sign comes from the tropical zodiac; Ardra is a sidereal mansion that lies inside sidereal Gemini. You can be a Western Gemini with no Ardra placements at all, and a Western Cancer with a Ardra Moon. The free chart shows your actual pair.
