3 Thunder
Three Wood, the star of the east and of spring: the trigram Zhen, thunder. This page is the reference for the third of the nine, the star the tradition reads as the eldest son.
What the tradition says
Nine Star Ki reads Three Wood as thunder announcing spring: energetic, direct, spontaneous and quick to start things, the natural pioneer who is first to try, first to say it and first to move. The tradition associates it with initiative, honesty to the point of bluntness, and a great deal of life brought into any room. Its element is Wood, its direction east, its season the beginning of spring, and its trigram Zhen, the arousing, which the I Ching reads as shock that brings movement.
The honest shadow is thunder's brevity: impatience, projects abandoned when the novelty fades, and a bluntness that bruises. The tradition says Three Wood is at its best with a big challenge, freedom to move, and somebody else handling the follow-through, and it does not pretend the follow-through is this star's gift.
The three positions
As a principal star, the self people deal with: Thunder announces spring. You are energetic, direct, spontaneous and quick to start things. You speak your mind, act on instinct and bring a lot of life into a room. You are the natural pioneer: first to try, first to say it, first to move. The risk is impatience and unfinished projects; you lose interest once the novelty fades and can be blunt to the point of bruising. You are at your best with a big challenge, freedom to move and someone else handling the follow-through.
As a character star, what runs underneath: Inside, you are impulsive and idealistic, with a short fuse and a quick recovery. You feel enthusiasm and frustration intensely and neither lasts long. You need stimulation, novelty and honest conversation. Being controlled or slowed down makes you restless and irritable. In close relationships you are loyal but easily bored, and you need a partner who can keep pace and take your directness in good humour.
As a surface star, the first impression: First impressions: lively, confident, a little loud. You come across as youthful and enthusiastic whatever your age. Under pressure you react fast and visibly: raised voice, quick decision, sometimes a temper. You act before the plan is finished. People either find this exhilarating or exhausting, and you tend to know which within minutes of meeting them.
Where 3 Thunder is this year
In the Ki year 2026, from Li Chun 2026 to Li Chun 2027, everyone whose principal star is 3 is in house 7, Metal · harvest, the reward. The harvest year. What you have worked for over the cycle starts to pay off: money, pleasure, recognition, ease. A year to enjoy yourself, spend a little, socialise and receive. Good for relationships, finances and anything involving persuasion or charm. The risk is complacency and over-indulgence, and letting standards slide because things feel easy. Take the reward, but keep one eye on what comes next.
From Li Chun 2027 the star moves to house 8, Earth · the mountain, stillness before the dawn.
The only system where everyone moves through the years together
Every 3 Thunder on earth is in the same house this year, and moves to the next on the same day.
In Vedic astrology your periods are your own: they run from the Moon's degree at your birth and nobody else's clock matches. In Nine Star Ki the cycle is the world's: the year star descends by one at every Li Chun, so the whole population of 3 Thunders moves from house 7 to house 8 together on or about 4 February 2027. The tradition reads the house as the weather of the year and says the weather is the same for everyone with the same star, which is a claim the other nine systems here never make. We show it beside them and do not count the shared turning as a finding about you; what is yours is which house your star is in.
The star itself comes from the year of birth alone, so it needs neither a time nor a place, and a January birth belongs to the year before, since the Ki year turns at Li Chun.
