Ashlesha

The ninth of the 27 lunar mansions, the layer of the Vedic sky that Western astrology does not have. Ashlesha is the nakshatra of the serpent: its deities are the Nagas, the serpent beings of the underworld, its symbol is a coiled snake, and its stars lie in the head of the Water Snake. The name means the embrace, or the clinging.

What the tradition says

Ashlesha's image is of the serpent's knowledge: what is underneath, what is said without being said, and the power that comes from seeing it. The classical texts read it as penetrating perception, a talent for persuasion, and a healer's understanding of poison, which is also the understanding of medicine. Mercury rules the mansion, which gives the perception its cunning; this is intelligence that works by indirection.

The honest shadow in the sources is the serpent's other reputation: manipulation, a suspicion that poisons what it touches, and a grip that does not let go. The texts say Ashlesha people must learn to use what they see to heal rather than to hold.

A Ashlesha Moon

An Ashlesha Moon describes a mind that reads underneath: feelings that are hidden and highly sensitive, an instinct for what others are really after, and a need for control that comes from having seen too much. Anyone born with the Moon here begins life in a Mercury period, and the sequence of their planetary seasons runs from there.

The four padas

All four of Ashlesha's padas fall in sidereal Cancer. The navamsa runs Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces across them; the tradition reads the first as the most philosophical, the fourth, in Pisces, as the one where the serpent's sensitivity is felt most and its grip most needs watching.

In degrees: pada 1 from 16°40′ Cancer to 20° Cancer with a Sagittarius navamsa, pada 2 from 20° Cancer to 23°20′ Cancer with a Capricorn navamsa, pada 3 from 23°20′ Cancer to 26°40′ Cancer with a Aquarius navamsa and pada 4 from 26°40′ Cancer to 0° Leo with a Pisces navamsa.

Why your Western chart never mentions this

There is no Western equivalent of Ashlesha.

Western astrology divides the sky into twelve signs and stops. The Vedic system lays 27 mansions of 13°20′ over its twelve signs, a finer grain with its own deities, symbols and timing system. There is no Western equivalent of Ashlesha, which is why a person can know their "big three" thoroughly and still meet something new the first time their Vedic chart is calculated. It is not that one system is finer-grained and therefore truer; they are answering different questions, and we show you both so you can see where they agree, and where they argue.

The Sun passes through Ashlesha from about 3 August to 17 August each year, which Western astrology calls Leo. A Moon can be here on any day of the year, since the Moon crosses a mansion in about a day, and it is the Moon the tradition reads first.

Questions people ask

Is Ashlesha a good nakshatra?

The tradition does not rank the mansions as good and bad; each carries a capacity and a cost, and Ashlesha's are the gift of seeing underneath and the tax of the grip. Readings that call nakshatras lucky or unlucky are selling something.

What if my Moon is at the edge of Ashlesha?

Then your pada matters more than usual, and your birth time matters more than usual, since the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and crosses from Pushya into Ashlesha and on into Magha within two. The calculator shows your exact degree and flags it when a placement sits near an edge.

I am a Cancer in Western astrology. Is Ashlesha the same thing?

No. Your Western sign comes from the tropical zodiac; Ashlesha is a sidereal mansion that lies inside sidereal Cancer. You can be a Western Cancer with no Ashlesha placements at all, and a Western Leo with a Ashlesha Moon. The free chart shows your actual pair.
