What the tradition says
Human Design reads splenic authority as an instant, quiet knowing that arrives in the moment and is gone: the Spleen is the body's oldest awareness, the one that kept people alive, and it says yes or no to a thing at once and never louder than a whisper. The tradition's instruction is to act on the first signal and not to wait for a second, because there is none. It is the authority of Projectors and Manifestors with a defined Spleen and the two emotional centres open.
The honest shadow is the whisper talked over: the instinct that said no at the door, reasoned away by the mind, and confirmed by events a month later. The tradition reads splenic people as the ones who say afterwards that they knew, and it says the design asks them to act on the knowing before it can be argued with.
How the chart gives splenic authority
The oldest awareness in the body, concerned with survival and health, speaking once, quietly, in the present tense. It does not repeat itself and it does not build an argument. The difficulty is not hearing it but trusting it, because by the time the mind has assembled reasons, the moment it spoke about has passed.
On an ordinary day
Splenic authority on an ordinary day is a matter of speed: the answer is there in the first second and is fading by the third. The tradition asks for the small signals to be trusted, a sudden reluctance, a sudden ease, especially about people and places, and for the mind's second opinion to be recognised as the thing that drowns them.
What Western astrology cannot see: a decision mechanism
A Western chart cannot say whether you decide in the moment or over a wave. Splenic authority says exactly that.
Western astrology has no type and no authority: nothing in a natal chart says wait to respond or inform before you act, because the tradition reads placements as qualities rather than as mechanics. Human Design takes the same moment of birth, and a second moment about eighty-eight days before it, and reads the sixty-four gates as wiring, so that a type is a type by the shape of the circuit rather than by any planet's meaning. Who has splenic authority?

Can I have two authorities?
No. One centre decides, by rank: a defined Solar Plexus outranks everything below it, which is why nearly half of all charts are emotional, and splenic authority applies only when the centres above it on the list are open.
Can my authority change?
No. It is fixed by the birth chart. What changes is whether it is followed, and the tradition reads the not-self theme of your type as the sign that it is not.
