Ego authority
The authority of a defined Heart with the three centres above it open: the will. This page is the reference for the rarest of the inner authorities, which decides by what it is willing to commit to.
What the tradition says
Human Design reads ego authority as the voice of the will: the Heart centre, which the tradition also calls the Ego, holds the capacity to promise and to keep the promise, and a person with this authority decides by hearing what they want and what they are prepared to give for it. The question is not what feels right but what I will do. It is uncommon, since it needs a defined Heart with the Solar Plexus, Sacral and Spleen all open, and it belongs to a small number of Manifestors and Projectors.
The honest shadow is the promise made to please: a will bent to other people's wanting, commitments that drain the Heart because they were never its own, and a bluntness about self-interest that others read as selfishness. The tradition says the ego person has to be allowed to want things out loud, and that the wanting is the design working.
How the chart gives ego authority
Decisions rest on the will, and the honest question is whether there is genuinely appetite for the thing, not whether it is a good idea. Listening to what comes out of your own mouth when you talk about it is the mechanism. If the willingness is not there, no amount of merit in the proposal will supply it.
On an ordinary day
Ego authority on an ordinary day sounds like a statement rather than a feeling: I want this, I will do that, I am not prepared to. The tradition asks for the sentences to be said and heard, since the voice of the will is what the person decides by, and for the rest of the chart's opinions to be treated as weather.
What Western astrology cannot see: a decision mechanism
A Western chart cannot say whether you decide in the moment or over a wave. Ego authority says exactly that.
Western astrology has no type and no authority: nothing in a natal chart says wait to respond or inform before you act, because the tradition reads placements as qualities rather than as mechanics. Human Design takes the same moment of birth, and a second moment about eighty-eight days before it, and reads the sixty-four gates as wiring, so that a type is a type by the shape of the circuit rather than by any planet's meaning. That is why a person can have a Western chart full of fire and be built to wait. We show both, and where the strategy and the Sun sign pull in different directions we say so rather than choosing.
The mechanism is only as good as the birth time: the design side of the chart moves with it, and a defined centre can open with an hour's change. The calculator says which gates and channels carry the definition, and flags a chart that sits near a boundary.

Who has ego authority?

Can I have two authorities?
No. One centre decides, by rank: a defined Solar Plexus outranks everything below it, which is why nearly half of all charts are emotional, and ego authority applies only when the centres above it on the list are open.
Can my authority change?
No. It is fixed by the birth chart. What changes is whether it is followed, and the tradition reads the not-self theme of your type as the sign that it is not.
