Shravana

The twenty-second of the 27 lunar mansions, the layer of the Vedic sky that Western astrology does not have. Shravana is the nakshatra of listening: its deity is Vishnu, who keeps the world going, its symbol is an ear, or the three footprints of Vishnu's stride across the universe, and its star is Altair, the bright eye of the Eagle. The name means hearing.

What the tradition says

Shravana's image is of the ear: knowledge that comes by listening, teaching that comes by having been taught, and the reputation that is built on actually paying attention. The classical texts read it as learning, connection, a gift for languages and for carrying what is heard to where it is needed, and a steadiness that Vishnu lends. The Moon rules the mansion, which gives the listening its receptiveness; this is an ear that hears the feeling as well as the words.

The honest shadow in the sources is the listener's cost: a habit of taking in everyone's story and telling none of one's own, a gossip's temptation, and a rigidity about the tradition heard from the elders. The texts say Shravana people must learn that hearing is for passing on, not for hoarding.

A Shravana Moon

A Shravana Moon describes a mind that listens: feelings that are absorbed from others before they are recognised as one's own, a comfort in learning and in conversation, and a reticence about speaking first. Anyone born with the Moon here begins life in a Moon period, and the sequence of their planetary seasons runs from there.

The four padas

All four of Shravana's padas fall in sidereal Capricorn. The navamsa runs Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer across them; the tradition reads the third, in Gemini, as the most articulate, the listener who also speaks, and the fourth, in Cancer, as the most receptive.

In degrees: pada 1 from 10° Capricorn to 13°20′ Capricorn with a Aries navamsa, pada 2 from 13°20′ Capricorn to 16°40′ Capricorn with a Taurus navamsa, pada 3 from 16°40′ Capricorn to 20° Capricorn with a Gemini navamsa and pada 4 from 20° Capricorn to 23°20′ Capricorn with a Cancer navamsa.

Why your Western chart never mentions this

There is no Western equivalent of Shravana.

Western astrology divides the sky into twelve signs and stops. The Vedic system lays 27 mansions of 13°20′ over its twelve signs, a finer grain with its own deities, symbols and timing system. There is no Western equivalent of Shravana, which is why a person can know their "big three" thoroughly and still meet something new the first time their Vedic chart is calculated. It is not that one system is finer-grained and therefore truer; they are answering different questions, and we show you both so you can see where they agree, and where they argue.

The Sun passes through Shravana from about 24 January to 6 February each year, which Western astrology calls Aquarius. A Moon can be here on any day of the year, since the Moon crosses a mansion in about a day, and it is the Moon the tradition reads first.

Questions people ask

Is Shravana a good nakshatra?

The tradition does not rank the mansions as good and bad; each carries a capacity and a cost, and Shravana's are the gift of listening and the tax of never being heard. Readings that call nakshatras lucky or unlucky are selling something.

What if my Moon is at the edge of Shravana?

Then your pada matters more than usual, and your birth time matters more than usual, since the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and crosses from Uttara Ashadha into Shravana and on into Dhanishta within two. The calculator shows your exact degree and flags it when a placement sits near an edge.

I am a Capricorn in Western astrology. Is Shravana the same thing?

No. Your Western sign comes from the tropical zodiac; Shravana is a sidereal mansion that lies inside sidereal Capricorn. You can be a Western Capricorn with no Shravana placements at all, and a Western Aquarius with a Shravana Moon. The free chart shows your actual pair.
