Rohini
The fourth of the 27 lunar mansions, the layer of the Vedic sky that Western astrology does not have. Rohini is the nakshatra of growth and attraction: its deity is Brahma, who makes, its symbol is the ox cart that carries the harvest, and its star is Aldebaran, the red eye of the Bull. The name means the red one, or the one who grows.

What the tradition says
Rohini's image is of fertility in the widest sense: things drawn towards it and made to grow, comfort, beauty and material steadiness that are not apologised for. The classical texts read it as charm, sensuality, and a talent for making a place abundant; the Moon is said to have loved Rohini best of all his twenty-seven wives. The Moon rules the mansion, which gives the growing its tides.
The honest shadow in the sources is attachment: possessiveness about people and things, jealousy when the attention moves elsewhere, and a comfort that can settle into indulgence. The texts say Rohini people must learn that what is drawn towards them was never owned.
A Rohini Moon
A Rohini Moon is one the tradition treats as strong, since the Moon is in its exaltation sign here. It describes a mind that wants to be comfortable and to be loved, that makes its surroundings pleasant, and that feels loss of attention as a real wound. Anyone born with the Moon here begins life in a Moon period, and the sequence of their planetary seasons runs from there.
The four padas
All four of Rohini's padas fall in sidereal Taurus. The navamsa runs Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer across them; the second pada, Taurus within Taurus, is the one the tradition reads as the purest expression of the mansion's steadiness, and the fourth as the most emotional.
In degrees: pada 1 from 10° Taurus to 13°20′ Taurus with a Aries navamsa, pada 2 from 13°20′ Taurus to 16°40′ Taurus with a Taurus navamsa, pada 3 from 16°40′ Taurus to 20° Taurus with a Gemini navamsa and pada 4 from 20° Taurus to 23°20′ Taurus with a Cancer navamsa.
Why your Western chart never mentions this
There is no Western equivalent of Rohini.
Western astrology divides the sky into twelve signs and stops. The Vedic system lays 27 mansions of 13°20′ over its twelve signs, a finer grain with its own deities, symbols and timing system. There is no Western equivalent of Rohini, which is why a person can know their "big three" thoroughly and still meet something new the first time their Vedic chart is calculated. It is not that one system is finer-grained and therefore truer; they are answering different questions, and we show you both so you can see where they agree, and where they argue.
The Sun passes through Rohini from about 25 May to 8 June each year, which Western astrology calls Gemini. A Moon can be here on any day of the year, since the Moon crosses a mansion in about a day, and it is the Moon the tradition reads first.

Questions people ask
Is Rohini a good nakshatra?
The tradition does not rank the mansions as good and bad; each carries a capacity and a cost, and Rohini's are the gift of drawing things to grow and the tax of holding on. Readings that call nakshatras lucky or unlucky are selling something.
What if my Moon is at the edge of Rohini?
Then your pada matters more than usual, and your birth time matters more than usual, since the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and crosses from Krittika into Rohini and on into Mrigashira within two. The calculator shows your exact degree and flags it when a placement sits near an edge.
I am a Taurus in Western astrology. Is Rohini the same thing?
No. Your Western sign comes from the tropical zodiac; Rohini is a sidereal mansion that lies inside sidereal Taurus. You can be a Western Taurus with no Rohini placements at all, and a Western Gemini with a Rohini Moon. The free chart shows your actual pair.
