The month at a glance

Where they agree, and where they argue

A month for reviewing what you value

Venus retrograde is the Western sky's review of love, money and worth. The Sun crosses Human Design gate 50, the I Ching's Cauldron, the figure of values held in common. The Earth Dog month reads as storage and guardianship, and the Taurus full moon on the 26th closes the month on an honest stock-take of resources. Four traditions, one direction.

Two counts start together on the 10th

The Libra new moon and the Tzolk'in trecena of 1 Imix begin on the same day. The counts share no ancestry and no arithmetic. When unrelated calendars open a cycle together, that is worth noticing, and it makes the 10th the month's natural starting line.

Depth over speed

The Sun's run of hexagrams this month is The Well, the Wind, Duration, the Cauldron: drawing deep, persisting, holding. The sidereal Sun's move into Libra and then the tropical Sun's into Scorpio both carry the year away from display and toward weighing.

Be seen, or hold back?

Nine Star Ki calls this a 9 Purple Fire month, its brightest and most visible note, a time when attention finds people. The Western sky runs Venus retrograde all month and adds Mercury retrograde from the 24th, the classic counsel to review rather than launch. Both are honestly stated readings and they pull in opposite directions. Which one describes your October is something only your own chart, and your own week, can say.

The Vedic sky is warmer than the Western one

From India the month carries Jupiter exalted in sidereal Cancer, a generous backdrop. From the West the headline is two retrogrades. Same sky, two moods. We print both.

Week by week

Week 1 · 1 to 8 October

The last tally

  • Last quarter Moon in tropical Cancer on the 3rd
  • Venus stations retrograde the same day, beginning a six week review of value and relationship
  • Cold Dew on the 8th opens the Earth Dog month and the 9 Purple Fire month

The closing week of a lunar cycle, with Venus turning inward as it ends. The traditions that read timing treat a week like this as the tally before the next cycle: what the last month actually cost, what it actually gave. The Earth Dog month that opens on the 8th is read in Four Pillars as a guard and store season, not a spend season.

To sit with: What has quietly become more expensive than it is worth, in money, time or attention?
Week 2 · 9 to 16 October

The double beginning

  • New moon on the 10th in tropical Libra, sidereal Hasta
  • The trecena of 1 Imix, the Tzolk'in's own new cycle, begins the same day
  • Pluto stations direct on the 16th

Two unrelated counts open together, and with Venus retrograde overhead the traditions read this less as a launch window and more as a clean page for revisiting: agreements worth renegotiating, partnerships worth restating. Hasta, the sidereal mansion of the skilled hand, gives the Vedic reading its note: begin by the handful, not the armful.

To sit with: Which existing agreement, restated plainly, would do more than any new one you could start?
Week 3 · 17 to 23 October

The turn toward depth

  • Tula Sankranti on the 17th, the Sun entering sidereal Libra
  • First quarter Moon in Capricorn on the 18th
  • The Sun enters tropical Scorpio on the 23rd, as the trecena of 1 Ix begins

Both zodiacs turn in the same week, one into the sign of weighing, one into the sign of depth. The first quarter is the lunar cycle's working phase, and in a Venus retrograde month the work is revision. Nine Star Ki holds its brightest note through all of this, so the week can feel like being asked to show up publicly for something still under review. Both can be true.

To sit with: Where are you being seen for a version of something you are still rebuilding, and what is the honest sentence about that?
Week 4 · 24 to 31 October

The honest stock-take

  • Mercury stations retrograde on the 24th, joining Venus until mid November
  • Retrograde Venus re-enters tropical Libra on the 25th
  • Full Hunter's Moon on the 26th in tropical Taurus, sidereal Ashwini
  • Hagalaz, the hail rune, opens its half month on the 28th

The densest week of the month. With both inner planets retrograde the Western counsel is blunt: finish, check, re-read, resend nothing in haste. The Taurus full moon is the year's classic stock-take of resources, and in the sidereal sky it falls in Ashwini, the first mansion, as if the inventory were being taken right back at the start of things. The northern calendar's hail rune says the same in colder language: weather happens, provision for it.

To sit with: If you counted everything you are carrying into November, what would you set down before the month turns?

Conditions, not predictions. Nothing here says what will happen.

The month in each system

WesternSun Libra then Scorpio from the 23rd. Venus retrograde all month, Mercury retrograde from the 24th. New moon Libra on the 10th, full moon Taurus on the 26th.
VedicSun enters Tula on the 17th. Jupiter exalted and direct in sidereal Cancer, Saturn retrograde in Pisces. New moon in Hasta, full moon in Ashwini. Your own dasha outranks all of it.
Four PillarsWu Xu, the Earth Dog month, opens on the 8th within the Fire Horse year. Heavy Earth: a season read for storing and guarding rather than spending.
Nine Star KiMonth star 9 Purple Fire from the 8th, in a 1 White Water year. Visibility against a quiet yearly undertow, the month's loudest argument with the Western sky.
NumerologyUniversal month 11 in a 1 universal year. The tradition keeps 11 whole: a sensitive, partnership-toned month rather than an action month.
Human DesignThe Sun crosses gates 48, 57, 32, 50 and 28: depth, instinct, continuity, values, purpose. A transit arc about what is worth keeping.
Gene KeysThe same arc read as spectrum work: the shadows of inadequacy and expectation invited toward depth and discernment. Slow reading, deliberately.
I ChingThe Well, the Wind, Duration, the Cauldron, Preponderance of the Great. Draw deep, persist gently, hold what matters, know what is too heavy.
Tzolk'inTrecenas of 1 Imix from the 10th and 1 Ix from the 23rd, on the GMT count the daykeepers keep. Beginnings of the primal and the magician kind.
Birth runesGebo, the gift, to the 13th. Wunjo, joy, to the 28th. Then Hagalaz, hail. A modern calendar, held lightly, and it still rhymes with the month's turn.
