Partner. Built to work in pairs. The contribution is made alongside someone rather than in front of them, and it is routinely undercounted, including by the person making it. A life path is the whole date of birth reduced to one number, and it is the lightest reading on this site, which this page says plainly.
What the tradition says
Numerology reads the 2 as the number of the pair: cooperation, receptivity, and the capacity to make something work between two people. The tradition associates it with diplomacy, patience and sensitivity, and reads a life path 2 as a brief to partner, to support, and to keep the peace that lets other things happen.
The honest shadow in the same tradition is the 2's self-effacement: a contribution routinely undercounted, including by the person making it, a dependence on being needed, and a resentment that builds quietly. The tradition keeps the sensitivity and the sulk together.
How the number is reached
Take the year, the month and the day, reduce each to a single figure or to 11, 22 or 33, add the three and reduce again. 11 April 1985 gives 1985, which reduces to 5; 4 reduces to 4; 11 reduces to 11; 5 + 4 + 11 is 20, and 20 reduces to 2. Some schools add every digit in one line and can reach a different master number for the same date; ours reduces each part first, which is the Pythagorean method the engine uses.

In a life the 2 tends to show up as work done alongside someone rather than in front of them, a talent for the second chair that the first chair depends on, and a hurt whenever the partnership is taken for granted.

A life path is one number from a date, and a date is the least a birth can tell you.
Numerology needs no time, no place and no sky: the same date gives the same number in Delhi and in Dublin, at dawn and at midnight. That is its strength, since it is never missing, and its limit, since it cannot see anything the other nine systems see. We put it beside them rather than above them. The Moon's sign and nakshatra say what the sensitivity actually needs, and a Human Design projector type says whether the waiting to be invited is the whole design.
Where the number agrees with the chart, we say so; where it does not, we show both and do not resolve the argument. A number that agrees with nothing is not wrong. It is light, and it says so.

How do I work out my life path?

Because there are two ways to add. Ours reduces year, month and day separately and keeps 11, 22 and 33; adding every digit in one line can turn a master number into a plain one or the other way about. Neither is wrong, and the free chart shows which was used.
