6 · The Dispute
Gate 6 in Human Design, Gene Key 6, and hexagram 6 of the I Ching, The Dispute 訟: one number, three traditions, read together on this page and kept apart where they differ.

The number, read across the three
Human Design places gate 6 in the Solar Plexus and reads it as friction: the membrane between people, the intimacy that comes through conflict and the conflict that comes through intimacy. Gene Keys reads it as conflict to diplomacy, the movement from fighting to meeting. The I Ching calls it conflict, the dispute that cannot be carried through to the end.
The honest shadow is conflict for its own sake: friction sought because it feels like contact, a diplomacy that avoids the real disagreement, and moods that others meet as walls. The tradition says gate 6 with gate 59 is the channel of mating, and that the friction is what makes the intimacy possible.
The hexagram
The judgement: You are in the right and you are blocked, so stay wary. Stopping halfway is good fortune. It ends in misfortune. It is worth going to see someone of standing. It is not worth crossing the great water.
The image: Sky and water travelling in opposite directions. So in everything the person of worth undertakes, they think about the beginning of it.
The six lines
Line 1. Do not keep the business running for ever. There is a little talk. It ends in good fortune.
Line 2. You cannot win the case, so you go home and get out of the way. The three hundred households of your town come to no harm.
Line 3. Living off what you earned long ago. Staying straight is dangerous here. It ends in good fortune. If you are in a ruler's service, do not look for the credit.
Line 4. You cannot win the case. You turn back, take the ruling, change course, and settle into staying straight. Good fortune.
Line 5. The case is heard here. Good fortune from the source.
Line 6. You may be handed a leather belt of office, and before the morning is out it is taken off you three times.
In a Human Design chart
Gate 6 sits in the Solar Plexus centre. Its channel partner is gate 59, in the Sacral centre. When both gates of a channel are activated, one from each end, the channel is defined and both centres with it, which is how the tradition builds a type and an authority. A gate on its own is a hanging gate: a theme without its circuit, and the tradition reads it as a pull towards whoever carries the other half.
Three traditions, one number
The same sixty-four figures, read three ways, and the three do not say the same thing.
Human Design took the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching and mapped them round the zodiac as gates, so that a planet at a degree is a planet in a gate; Gene Keys took the same sixty-four and read each as a spectrum from a shadow to a gift to a siddhi; the I Ching itself reads the figure as a situation, with a judgement, an image and six changing lines. Number 6 is friction in the first, conflict becoming diplomacy in the second, and The Dispute in the third. They share a number and a diagram, and they were written for three different purposes, which is why we show all three rather than translating one into the others. The I Ching text on this page is our own English, made from the Chinese with the Wilhelm paragraph as a reading reference, and every passage carries its provenance.
Whether the number is in your chart at all is a Human Design question: the calculator says which gates your planets activate, on the personality side and the design side, and which of them complete a channel.

Questions people ask
What does gate 6 mean in Human Design?
Friction, in the Solar Plexus centre. Human Design places gate 6 in the Solar Plexus and reads it as friction: the membrane between people, the intimacy that comes through conflict and the conflict that comes through intimacy. Whether it is active in your chart depends on where your planets were at birth and about eighty-eight days before it.
What is Gene Key 6?
The same number read as a spectrum: the shadow of conflict, the gift of diplomacy, the siddhi of peace. Gene Keys reads the shadow as the starting point and the gift as what it becomes when it is met rather than fought.
Is hexagram 6 the same as gate 6?
The same figure and the same number, read for different purposes: the I Ching reads it as a situation you have cast or are in, Human Design as a fixed activation in a birth chart. A cast hexagram is not a natal gate, and the site keeps the two apart.
We read charts for pattern and coherence, not prediction. Nothing here tells you what will happen, and nothing here tells you who you are; it shows a structure and leaves the judgement with you.
