Gate 46 in Human Design, Gene Key 46, and hexagram 46 of the I Ching, Rising 升: one number, three traditions, read together on this page and kept apart where they differ.
The number, read across the three
Human Design places gate 46 in the G centre and reads it as the determination of the self: the love of the body, the sense of being in the right place at the right time, the luck that is really embodiment. Gene Keys reads it as seriousness to delight, the movement from a body carried as a burden to one lived in with pleasure. The I Ching calls it pushing upward, the tree growing out of the earth.
The honest shadow is seriousness: a body treated as a machine, a determination that pushes through what the body is saying, and a heaviness that misses the luck. The tradition says gate 46 with gate 29 is the channel of discovery, and that the discovery is made by the body being where it is.
The hexagram
The judgement: From the source, it carries through. Go and see someone of standing. Do not fret. To set out south is good fortune.
The image: Wood growing up inside the earth. So the person of worth, going with things, piles up the small to reach the high and the large.
The six lines
Line 1. Rising, and trusted for it. Great good fortune.
Line 2. Hold true, and a small offering is worth making. No fault.
Line 3. Rising into an empty town.
Line 4. The king makes his offering at Mount Qi. Good fortune. No fault.
Line 5. To stay straight is good fortune. Rising by steps.
Line 6. Rising in the dark. It is worth staying straight without letting up.
In a Human Design chart
Gate 46 sits in the G centre. Its channel partner is gate 29, in the Sacral centre. When both gates of a channel are activated, one from each end, the channel is defined and both centres with it, which is how the tradition builds a type and an authority. A gate on its own is a hanging gate: a theme without its circuit, and the tradition reads it as a pull towards whoever carries the other half.
Three traditions, one number
The same sixty-four figures, read three ways, and the three do not say the same thing.
Human Design took the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching and mapped them round the zodiac as gates, so that a planet at a degree is a planet in a gate; Gene Keys took the same sixty-four and read each as a spectrum from a shadow to a gift to a siddhi; the I Ching itself reads the figure as a situation, with a judgement, an image and six changing lines. Number 46 is the determination of the self in the first, seriousness becoming delight in the second, and Rising in the third. They share a number and a diagram, and they were written for three different purposes, which is why we show all three rather than translating one into the others. What does gate 46 mean in Human Design?

Is hexagram 46 the same as gate 46?
The same figure and the same number, read for different purposes: the I Ching reads it as a situation you have cast or are in, Human Design as a fixed activation in a birth chart. A cast hexagram is not a natal gate, and the site keeps the two apart.
