Gate 45 in Human Design, Gene Key 45, and hexagram 45 of the I Ching, Gathering 萃: one number, three traditions, read together on this page and kept apart where they differ.
The number, read across the three
Human Design places gate 45 in the Throat and reads it as the gatherer: the voice of the ruler, the one who holds the resources and speaks for the tribe, the king or queen whose word is the kingdom's. Gene Keys reads it as dominance to synergy, the movement from ruling to enabling. The I Ching calls it gathering together, the lake over the earth.
The honest shadow is dominance: a gatherer who keeps what is gathered, a voice that speaks for people it does not consult, and a possessiveness about the kingdom. The tradition says gate 45 with gate 21 is the channel of the money line, and that the ruler who does not share loses the hunter.
The hexagram
The judgement: It carries through. The king comes to his temple. It is worth going to see someone of standing. It carries through. It is worth staying straight. Bringing a great offering is good fortune. It is worth having somewhere to go.
The image: The marsh risen above the earth. So the person of worth puts their weapons in order against what cannot be foreseen.
The six lines
Line 1. Hold true, but not to the end, and there is confusion and then gathering. Call out, and in one grasp it turns to laughter. Do not fret. To go on is no fault.
Line 2. Let yourself be drawn in. Good fortune. No fault. Hold true, and a small offering is worth making.
Line 3. Gathering, and sighing over it. Nothing here is worth doing. To go on is no fault. A little humiliation.
Line 4. Great good fortune. No fault.
Line 5. Gathering, and holding the position for it. No fault. Where some do not yet hold true, it takes staying straight from the source and for the long run. Regret fades.
Line 6. Lamenting and sighing, tears streaming. No fault.
In a Human Design chart
Gate 45 sits in the Throat centre. Its channel partner is gate 21, in the Heart centre. When both gates of a channel are activated, one from each end, the channel is defined and both centres with it, which is how the tradition builds a type and an authority. A gate on its own is a hanging gate: a theme without its circuit, and the tradition reads it as a pull towards whoever carries the other half.
Three traditions, one number
The same sixty-four figures, read three ways, and the three do not say the same thing.
Human Design took the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching and mapped them round the zodiac as gates, so that a planet at a degree is a planet in a gate; Gene Keys took the same sixty-four and read each as a spectrum from a shadow to a gift to a siddhi; the I Ching itself reads the figure as a situation, with a judgement, an image and six changing lines. Number 45 is the gatherer in the first, dominance becoming synergy in the second, and Gathering in the third. They share a number and a diagram, and they were written for three different purposes, which is why we show all three rather than translating one into the others. What does gate 45 mean in Human Design?
The gatherer, in the Throat centre. Human Design places gate 45 in the Throat and reads it as the gatherer: the voice of the ruler, the one who holds the resources and speaks for the tribe, the king or queen whose word is the kingdom's. Whether it is active in your chart depends on where your planets were at birth and about eighty-eight days before it.
What is Gene Key 45?
The same number read as a spectrum: the shadow of dominance, the gift of synergy, the siddhi of communion. Gene Keys reads the shadow as the starting point and the gift as what it becomes when it is met rather than fought.
Is hexagram 45 the same as gate 45?
The same figure and the same number, read for different purposes: the I Ching reads it as a situation you have cast or are in, Human Design as a fixed activation in a birth chart. A cast hexagram is not a natal gate, and the site keeps the two apart.
