The number, read across the three
Human Design places gate 37 in the Solar Plexus and reads it as friendship: the feeling that binds a family, a community, a household, the warmth of belonging and the bargain that keeps it. Gene Keys reads it as weakness to equality, the movement from needing the family to standing within it. The I Ching calls it the family, the clan, fire from which wind comes.
The honest shadow is weakness: a belonging that depends on being needed, a friendship that keeps accounts, and a feeling that collapses when the bargain is broken. The tradition says gate 37 with gate 40 is the channel of community, and that the friendship rests on the aloneness of the other gate.
The hexagram
The judgement: For a woman, staying straight is worth it.
The image: Wind coming out of fire. So the person of worth has substance in what they say and constancy in how they live.
The six lines
Line 1. The household kept in order from the start. Regret fades.
Line 2. She does not follow her own whim. She sees to the food inside. To stay straight is good fortune.
Line 3. The household is harsh. Regret. Danger. Good fortune. Wife and child giggling: it ends in humiliation.
Line 4. She is the wealth of the house. Great good fortune.
Line 5. The king comes to his household. Do not fret. Good fortune.
Line 6. Hold true and carry weight. It ends in good fortune.
In a Human Design chart
Gate 37 sits in the Solar Plexus centre. Its channel partner is gate 40, in the Heart centre. When both gates of a channel are activated, one from each end, the channel is defined and both centres with it, which is how the tradition builds a type and an authority. A gate on its own is a hanging gate: a theme without its circuit, and the tradition reads it as a pull towards whoever carries the other half.
Three traditions, one number
The same sixty-four figures, read three ways, and the three do not say the same thing.
Human Design took the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching and mapped them round the zodiac as gates, so that a planet at a degree is a planet in a gate; Gene Keys took the same sixty-four and read each as a spectrum from a shadow to a gift to a siddhi; the I Ching itself reads the figure as a situation, with a judgement, an image and six changing lines. Number 37 is friendship in the first, weakness becoming equality in the second, and The Family in the third. They share a number and a diagram, and they were written for three different purposes, which is why we show all three rather than translating one into the others. Is hexagram 37 the same as gate 37?
The same figure and the same number, read for different purposes: the I Ching reads it as a situation you have cast or are in, Human Design as a fixed activation in a birth chart. A cast hexagram is not a natal gate, and the site keeps the two apart.
