36 · The Wounded Light
Gate 36 in Human Design, Gene Key 36, and hexagram 36 of the I Ching, The Wounded Light 明夷: one number, three traditions, read together on this page and kept apart where they differ.

The number, read across the three
Human Design places gate 36 in the Solar Plexus and reads it as crisis: the feeling of inexperience meeting a new experience, the emotional turbulence of the first time. Gene Keys reads it as turbulence to humanity, the movement from being thrown by feeling to being deepened by it. The I Ching calls it the darkening of the light, the light that must be hidden to survive.
The honest shadow is turbulence: crisis manufactured, an emotional life that swings from one drama to the next, and a suffering that the tradition says is meant to become compassion and does not always. The tradition says gate 36 needs gate 35 to turn the crisis into experience, and that until then it repeats.
The hexagram
The judgement: It is worth staying straight through hardship.
The image: The light sunk into the earth. So the person of worth lives among the many, veiling their brightness and staying bright.
The six lines
Line 1. The light wounded in flight. It lets its wings hang. The person of worth on the road eats nothing for three days. There is somewhere to go. The host has words about him.
Line 2. The light wounded, wounded in the left thigh. He is carried clear by the strength of a horse. Good fortune.
Line 3. The light wounded, on the hunt in the south. He takes their great head. Do not expect to stay straight in a hurry.
Line 4. He goes in at the left belly, gets at the heart of the wounded light, and leaves by the gate and the courtyard.
Line 5. The wounded light of Prince Ji. It is worth staying straight.
Line 6. Not light, but dark. First he climbed to heaven, then he dropped into the depths of the earth.
In a Human Design chart
Gate 36 sits in the Solar Plexus centre. Its channel partner is gate 35, in the Throat centre. When both gates of a channel are activated, one from each end, the channel is defined and both centres with it, which is how the tradition builds a type and an authority. A gate on its own is a hanging gate: a theme without its circuit, and the tradition reads it as a pull towards whoever carries the other half.
Three traditions, one number
The same sixty-four figures, read three ways, and the three do not say the same thing.
Human Design took the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching and mapped them round the zodiac as gates, so that a planet at a degree is a planet in a gate; Gene Keys took the same sixty-four and read each as a spectrum from a shadow to a gift to a siddhi; the I Ching itself reads the figure as a situation, with a judgement, an image and six changing lines. Number 36 is crisis in the first, turbulence becoming humanity in the second, and The Wounded Light in the third. They share a number and a diagram, and they were written for three different purposes, which is why we show all three rather than translating one into the others. The I Ching text on this page is our own English, made from the Chinese with the Wilhelm paragraph as a reading reference, and every passage carries its provenance.
Whether the number is in your chart at all is a Human Design question: the calculator says which gates your planets activate, on the personality side and the design side, and which of them complete a channel.

Questions people ask
What does gate 36 mean in Human Design?
Crisis, in the Solar Plexus centre. Human Design places gate 36 in the Solar Plexus and reads it as crisis: the feeling of inexperience meeting a new experience, the emotional turbulence of the first time. Whether it is active in your chart depends on where your planets were at birth and about eighty-eight days before it.
What is Gene Key 36?
The same number read as a spectrum: the shadow of turbulence, the gift of humanity, the siddhi of compassion. Gene Keys reads the shadow as the starting point and the gift as what it becomes when it is met rather than fought.
Is hexagram 36 the same as gate 36?
The same figure and the same number, read for different purposes: the I Ching reads it as a situation you have cast or are in, Human Design as a fixed activation in a birth chart. A cast hexagram is not a natal gate, and the site keeps the two apart.
We read charts for pattern and coherence, not prediction. Nothing here tells you what will happen, and nothing here tells you who you are; it shows a structure and leaves the judgement with you.
