3 · The First Tangle
Gate 3 in Human Design, Gene Key 3, and hexagram 3 of the I Ching, The First Tangle 屯: one number, three traditions, read together on this page and kept apart where they differ.

The number, read across the three
Human Design places gate 3 in the Sacral and reads it as ordering: the energy that brings order out of new beginnings, mutation, the difficulty at the start of anything that has not been done before. Gene Keys reads it as chaos to innovation, the mess from which the new thing comes. The I Ching calls it difficulty at the beginning, the sprout pushing through hard ground.
The honest shadow is chaos: beginnings that never become middles, a restlessness with anything settled, and a tolerance for disorder that others cannot live in. The tradition says gate 3 needs gate 60's limits to make the mutation stick, and that innovation without a container is just noise.
The hexagram
The judgement: Everything at once and nothing yet sorted. From the source, it carries through. It is worth staying straight. Do not set out anywhere. It is worth appointing people to help.
The image: Cloud and thunder, and nothing resolved yet. So the person of worth separates the threads and puts them in order.
The six lines
Line 1. Held up, going round in circles. It is worth staying where you are and staying straight. It is worth appointing people to help.
Line 2. Tangled, and going nowhere. The horses wheel round. He is not a raider; he has come to marry. The young woman holds out and does not agree. Ten years, and then she agrees.
Line 3. Chasing deer with nobody who knows the ground, and you go straight into the trees. The person of worth reads the moment and lets it go. To carry on. Humiliation.
Line 4. The horses wheel round. Go and ask for the marriage. To set out is good fortune. Everything here is worth doing.
Line 5. The good things are held back and not given out. To stay straight in small matters is good fortune. Staying straight in large ones is misfortune.
Line 6. The horses wheel round. Tears of blood run down.
In a Human Design chart
Gate 3 sits in the Sacral centre. Its channel partner is gate 60, in the Root centre. When both gates of a channel are activated, one from each end, the channel is defined and both centres with it, which is how the tradition builds a type and an authority. A gate on its own is a hanging gate: a theme without its circuit, and the tradition reads it as a pull towards whoever carries the other half.
Three traditions, one number
The same sixty-four figures, read three ways, and the three do not say the same thing.
Human Design took the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching and mapped them round the zodiac as gates, so that a planet at a degree is a planet in a gate; Gene Keys took the same sixty-four and read each as a spectrum from a shadow to a gift to a siddhi; the I Ching itself reads the figure as a situation, with a judgement, an image and six changing lines. Number 3 is ordering in the first, chaos becoming innovation in the second, and The First Tangle in the third. They share a number and a diagram, and they were written for three different purposes, which is why we show all three rather than translating one into the others. The I Ching text on this page is our own English, made from the Chinese with the Wilhelm paragraph as a reading reference, and every passage carries its provenance.
Whether the number is in your chart at all is a Human Design question: the calculator says which gates your planets activate, on the personality side and the design side, and which of them complete a channel.

Questions people ask
What does gate 3 mean in Human Design?
Ordering, in the Sacral centre. Human Design places gate 3 in the Sacral and reads it as ordering: the energy that brings order out of new beginnings, mutation, the difficulty at the start of anything that has not been done before. Whether it is active in your chart depends on where your planets were at birth and about eighty-eight days before it.
What is Gene Key 3?
The same number read as a spectrum: the shadow of chaos, the gift of innovation, the siddhi of innocence. Gene Keys reads the shadow as the starting point and the gift as what it becomes when it is met rather than fought.
Is hexagram 3 the same as gate 3?
The same figure and the same number, read for different purposes: the I Ching reads it as a situation you have cast or are in, Human Design as a fixed activation in a birth chart. A cast hexagram is not a natal gate, and the site keeps the two apart.
We read charts for pattern and coherence, not prediction. Nothing here tells you what will happen, and nothing here tells you who you are; it shows a structure and leaves the judgement with you.
