Carry. Built to take responsibility for others. Family, duty and standards, held to a degree that has to be watched or it becomes the whole life. A life path is the whole date of birth reduced to one number, and it is the lightest reading on this site, which this page says plainly.
What the tradition says
Numerology reads the 6 as the number of responsibility: home, family, care, and the standards that go with them. The tradition associates it with nurture, duty and harmony, and reads a life path 6 as a brief to take responsibility for others, and to make the place they live in good.
The honest shadow in the same tradition is the 6's overreach: a care that becomes control, a standard held over other people, and a martyrdom the tradition names without softening it. The 6 has to be watched or it becomes the whole life.
How the number is reached
Take the year, the month and the day, reduce each to a single figure or to 11, 22 or 33, add the three and reduce again. 9 January 1985 gives 1985, which reduces to 5; 1 reduces to 1; 9 reduces to 9; 5 + 1 + 9 is 15, and 15 reduces to 6. Some schools add every digit in one line and can reach a different master number for the same date; ours reduces each part first, which is the Pythagorean method the engine uses.
The 6 in a life
In a life the 6 tends to show up as the one who carries the family, the friend people bring their trouble to, and a difficulty with any situation in which nobody needs looking after.
The lightest system here, and we say so
A life path is one number from a date, and a date is the least a birth can tell you.
Numerology needs no time, no place and no sky: the same date gives the same number in Delhi and in Dublin, at dawn and at midnight. That is its strength, since it is never missing, and its limit, since it cannot see anything the other nine systems see. We put it beside them rather than above them. The Western fourth house and the Moon say what home actually means here, and a Cancer or Pushya emphasis says whether the caring is the centre of the chart or a corner of it.
Where the number agrees with the chart, we say so; where it does not, we show both and do not resolve the argument. A number that agrees with nothing is not wrong. It is light, and it says so.

How do I work out my life path?

Is 6 a good life path?
The tradition does not rank the numbers. Each is a brief with a gift and a cost, and the 6's are carry and its shadow, both on this page. Readings that rank the numbers are selling something.
Why do some sites give me a different number?
Because there are two ways to add. Ours reduces year, month and day separately and keeps 11, 22 and 33; adding every digit in one line can turn a master number into a plain one or the other way about. Neither is wrong, and the free chart shows which was used.
