The number, read across the three
Human Design places gate 62 in the Throat and reads it as details: the voice that names things, gives the facts, and grounds an opinion in particulars so that it can be shared. Gene Keys reads it as intellect to precision, the movement from cleverness to exactness. The I Ching calls it the preponderance of the small, the bird that should not fly too high.
The honest shadow is intellect: details that bury the point, a precision that is really pedantry, and a voice that explains what nobody asked. The tradition says gate 62 with gate 17 is the channel of acceptance, and that the details make the opinion useful or make it unbearable.
The hexagram
The judgement: It carries through. It is worth staying straight. Small things can be done; large things cannot. The flying bird leaves its call behind: it is not good to go up, it is good to stay down. Great good fortune.
The image: Thunder on the mountain. So the person of worth puts the excess into respect in how they behave, into grief when there is mourning, and into thrift in what they spend.
The six lines
Line 1. The flying bird comes to misfortune.
Line 2. Going past the grandfather and meeting the grandmother. Not reaching the prince and meeting the official. No fault.
Line 3. If you do not take extra care against it, someone comes from behind and strikes you. Misfortune.
Line 4. No fault. Without going past, you meet him. To go on is dangerous, and you must be on guard. This is no place to stay straight for the long run.
Line 5. Thick cloud and no rain, coming in from our own western fields. The duke shoots and hits the one in the pit.
Line 6. Without meeting it, he goes past. The flying bird leaves him. Misfortune. That is harm from outside and from within.
In a Human Design chart
Gate 62 sits in the Throat centre. Its channel partner is gate 17, in the Ajna centre. When both gates of a channel are activated, one from each end, the channel is defined and both centres with it, which is how the tradition builds a type and an authority. A gate on its own is a hanging gate: a theme without its circuit, and the tradition reads it as a pull towards whoever carries the other half.
Three traditions, one number
The same sixty-four figures, read three ways, and the three do not say the same thing.
Human Design took the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching and mapped them round the zodiac as gates, so that a planet at a degree is a planet in a gate; Gene Keys took the same sixty-four and read each as a spectrum from a shadow to a gift to a siddhi; the I Ching itself reads the figure as a situation, with a judgement, an image and six changing lines. Number 62 is details in the first, intellect becoming precision in the second, and Small Excess in the third. They share a number and a diagram, and they were written for three different purposes, which is why we show all three rather than translating one into the others. The same figure and the same number, read for different purposes: the I Ching reads it as a situation you have cast or are in, Human Design as a fixed activation in a birth chart. A cast hexagram is not a natal gate, and the site keeps the two apart.
