55 · Fullness
Gate 55 in Human Design, Gene Key 55, and hexagram 55 of the I Ching, Fullness 豐: one number, three traditions, read together on this page and kept apart where they differ.

The number, read across the three
Human Design places gate 55 in the Solar Plexus and reads it as spirit: the feeling of plenty or its absence, the mood that has nothing to do with circumstance, the cup half full or half empty by wave rather than by fact. Gene Keys reads it as victimisation to freedom, the movement from being ruled by the mood to being free of it. The I Ching calls it fullness, thunder and lightning together.
The honest shadow is victimisation: a mood blamed on the world, a melancholy that becomes an identity, and a spirit that waits for circumstances to change it. The tradition says gate 55 with gate 39 is the channel of emoting, and that the spirit is the wave's, not the day's.
The hexagram
The judgement: It carries through. The king reaches it. Do not grieve. Be like the sun at noon.
The image: Thunder and lightning both arrive. So the person of worth settles the cases and carries out the penalties.
The six lines
Line 1. He meets the lord who matches him. Ten days together, and no fault. To go on is held in regard.
Line 2. The curtain is so full that the pole stars are seen at noon. To go on brings suspicion and ill will. Hold true and rouse him, and there is good fortune.
Line 3. The undergrowth is so full that the small stars are seen at noon. He breaks his right arm. No fault.
Line 4. The curtain is so full that the pole stars are seen at noon. He meets the lord who is his equal. Good fortune.
Line 5. What is bright comes. Blessing and praise. Good fortune.
Line 6. His house is in fullness. He screens off his family. He peers through the gate and sees nobody there. For three years he sees nothing. Misfortune.
In a Human Design chart
Gate 55 sits in the Solar Plexus centre. Its channel partner is gate 39, in the Root centre. When both gates of a channel are activated, one from each end, the channel is defined and both centres with it, which is how the tradition builds a type and an authority. A gate on its own is a hanging gate: a theme without its circuit, and the tradition reads it as a pull towards whoever carries the other half.
Three traditions, one number
The same sixty-four figures, read three ways, and the three do not say the same thing.
Human Design took the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching and mapped them round the zodiac as gates, so that a planet at a degree is a planet in a gate; Gene Keys took the same sixty-four and read each as a spectrum from a shadow to a gift to a siddhi; the I Ching itself reads the figure as a situation, with a judgement, an image and six changing lines. Number 55 is spirit in the first, victimisation becoming freedom in the second, and Fullness in the third. They share a number and a diagram, and they were written for three different purposes, which is why we show all three rather than translating one into the others. The I Ching text on this page is our own English, made from the Chinese with the Wilhelm paragraph as a reading reference, and every passage carries its provenance.
Whether the number is in your chart at all is a Human Design question: the calculator says which gates your planets activate, on the personality side and the design side, and which of them complete a channel.

Questions people ask
What does gate 55 mean in Human Design?
Spirit, in the Solar Plexus centre. Human Design places gate 55 in the Solar Plexus and reads it as spirit: the feeling of plenty or its absence, the mood that has nothing to do with circumstance, the cup half full or half empty by wave rather than by fact. Whether it is active in your chart depends on where your planets were at birth and about eighty-eight days before it.
What is Gene Key 55?
The same number read as a spectrum: the shadow of victimisation, the gift of freedom, the siddhi of freedom. Gene Keys reads the shadow as the starting point and the gift as what it becomes when it is met rather than fought.
Is hexagram 55 the same as gate 55?
The same figure and the same number, read for different purposes: the I Ching reads it as a situation you have cast or are in, Human Design as a fixed activation in a birth chart. A cast hexagram is not a natal gate, and the site keeps the two apart.
We read charts for pattern and coherence, not prediction. Nothing here tells you what will happen, and nothing here tells you who you are; it shows a structure and leaves the judgement with you.
