The number, read across the three
Human Design places gate 49 in the Solar Plexus and reads it as principles: the feeling that decides who is in and who is out, the revolution that comes when the principle is violated. Gene Keys reads it as reaction to revolution, the movement from being triggered to changing what needed changing. The I Ching calls it revolution, moulting, fire in the lake.
The honest shadow is reaction: principles that are really moods, a rejection that arrives before the reason, and a revolution that overturns the table because it was upset. The tradition says gate 49 with gate 19 is the channel of synthesis, and that the principle serves the wanting or is just temper.
The hexagram
The judgement: On the day itself, you are believed. From the source, it carries through. It is worth staying straight. Regret fades.
The image: Fire inside the marsh. So the person of worth sets the calendar in order and makes the seasons clear.
The six lines
Line 1. Bound fast with yellow ox hide.
Line 2. On the day itself, change it. To set out is good fortune. No fault.
Line 3. To set out is misfortune. Staying straight is dangerous here. When the talk of change has come round three times, you may go with it and be believed.
Line 4. Regret fades. Hold true, and change what is ordered. Good fortune.
Line 5. Someone of standing changes as a tiger does. Before they have consulted the oracle, they are believed.
Line 6. The person of worth changes as a leopard does. The small-minded change their faces. To set out is misfortune. To stay where you are and stay straight is good fortune.
In a Human Design chart
Gate 49 sits in the Solar Plexus centre. Its channel partner is gate 19, in the Root centre. When both gates of a channel are activated, one from each end, the channel is defined and both centres with it, which is how the tradition builds a type and an authority. A gate on its own is a hanging gate: a theme without its circuit, and the tradition reads it as a pull towards whoever carries the other half.
Three traditions, one number
The same sixty-four figures, read three ways, and the three do not say the same thing.
Human Design took the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching and mapped them round the zodiac as gates, so that a planet at a degree is a planet in a gate; Gene Keys took the same sixty-four and read each as a spectrum from a shadow to a gift to a siddhi; the I Ching itself reads the figure as a situation, with a judgement, an image and six changing lines. Number 49 is principles in the first, reaction becoming revolution in the second, and The Moulting in the third. They share a number and a diagram, and they were written for three different purposes, which is why we show all three rather than translating one into the others. Is hexagram 49 the same as gate 49?
The same figure and the same number, read for different purposes: the I Ching reads it as a situation you have cast or are in, Human Design as a fixed activation in a birth chart. A cast hexagram is not a natal gate, and the site keeps the two apart.
