Gate 41 in Human Design, Gene Key 41, and hexagram 41 of the I Ching, Decrease 損: one number, three traditions, read together on this page and kept apart where they differ.
The number, read across the three
Human Design places gate 41 in the Root and reads it as contraction: the pressure at the beginning of every new cycle of experience, the fantasy of what could be felt, the first gate of the solar year. Gene Keys reads it as fantasy to anticipation, the movement from dreaming of feeling to being ready for it. The I Ching calls it decrease, the lake below the mountain, less that makes room.
The honest shadow is fantasy: a life lived in imagined experiences, an anticipation that never becomes participation, and a pressure that fantasises rather than begins. The tradition says gate 41 with gate 30 is the channel of recognition, and that the fantasy is the fuel and not the destination.
The hexagram
The judgement: Hold true, and good fortune from the source. No fault. You can stay straight here. It is worth having somewhere to go. How is it done? Two small bowls will do for the offering.
The image: A marsh at the foot of the mountain. So the person of worth checks their anger and holds down their appetites.
The six lines
Line 1. The work done, go quickly. No fault. Weigh how far you take from others.
Line 2. It is worth staying straight. To set out is misfortune. Without taking from yourself, you can add to others.
Line 3. When three walk together, they lose one. When one walks alone, he finds his companion.
Line 4. Take away what ails you, and the other comes quickly and is glad. No fault.
Line 5. Someone adds to it. Ten pairs of tortoises cannot go against it. Good fortune from the source.
Line 6. Added to without anyone being taken from. No fault. To stay straight is good fortune. It is worth having somewhere to go. You gain servants and no longer have a house of your own.
In a Human Design chart
Gate 41 sits in the Root centre. Its channel partner is gate 30, in the Solar Plexus centre. When both gates of a channel are activated, one from each end, the channel is defined and both centres with it, which is how the tradition builds a type and an authority. A gate on its own is a hanging gate: a theme without its circuit, and the tradition reads it as a pull towards whoever carries the other half.
Three traditions, one number
The same sixty-four figures, read three ways, and the three do not say the same thing.
Human Design took the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching and mapped them round the zodiac as gates, so that a planet at a degree is a planet in a gate; Gene Keys took the same sixty-four and read each as a spectrum from a shadow to a gift to a siddhi; the I Ching itself reads the figure as a situation, with a judgement, an image and six changing lines. Number 41 is contraction in the first, fantasy becoming anticipation in the second, and Decrease in the third. They share a number and a diagram, and they were written for three different purposes, which is why we show all three rather than translating one into the others. What does gate 41 mean in Human Design?
Contraction, in the Root centre. Human Design places gate 41 in the Root and reads it as contraction: the pressure at the beginning of every new cycle of experience, the fantasy of what could be felt, the first gate of the solar year. Whether it is active in your chart depends on where your planets were at birth and about eighty-eight days before it.
What is Gene Key 41?
The same number read as a spectrum: the shadow of fantasy, the gift of anticipation, the siddhi of emanation. Gene Keys reads the shadow as the starting point and the gift as what it becomes when it is met rather than fought.
Is hexagram 41 the same as gate 41?
The same figure and the same number, read for different purposes: the I Ching reads it as a situation you have cast or are in, Human Design as a fixed activation in a birth chart. A cast hexagram is not a natal gate, and the site keeps the two apart.
