The number, read across the three
Human Design places gate 12 in the Throat and reads it as caution: the voice that speaks only when the mood is right, the articulation of feeling that waits for its moment. Gene Keys reads it as vanity to discrimination, the movement from speaking for effect to speaking with care. The I Ching calls it standstill, the time when heaven and earth do not meet.
The honest shadow is vanity: caution that is really pride, a silence used to seem deep, and a moodiness that decides when others may be spoken to. The tradition says gate 12 with gate 22 is the channel of openness, and that the caution is what makes the openness bearable.
The hexagram
The judgement: Blocked, and by the wrong people. For the person of worth, staying straight is not worth it. The great goes, the small comes.
The image: Heaven and earth out of contact. So the person of worth falls back on their own worth to get clear of trouble, and does not let rank and pay honour them.
The six lines
Line 1. Pull up the grass and the roots come with it, each of a kind. To stay straight is good fortune. It carries through.
Line 2. They put up with it and go along. For the small-minded, good fortune. For someone of standing, being blocked is what carries through.
Line 3. They put up with it, and are ashamed.
Line 4. Orders come from above. No fault. Those of the same kind share in the blessing.
Line 5. The block gives way. For someone of standing, good fortune. It could fail, it could fail. So he ties it to a clump of mulberry shoots.
Line 6. The block tips over. Blocked first, glad after.
In a Human Design chart
Gate 12 sits in the Throat centre. Its channel partner is gate 22, in the Solar Plexus centre. When both gates of a channel are activated, one from each end, the channel is defined and both centres with it, which is how the tradition builds a type and an authority. A gate on its own is a hanging gate: a theme without its circuit, and the tradition reads it as a pull towards whoever carries the other half.
Three traditions, one number
The same sixty-four figures, read three ways, and the three do not say the same thing.
Human Design took the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching and mapped them round the zodiac as gates, so that a planet at a degree is a planet in a gate; Gene Keys took the same sixty-four and read each as a spectrum from a shadow to a gift to a siddhi; the I Ching itself reads the figure as a situation, with a judgement, an image and six changing lines. Number 12 is caution in the first, vanity becoming discrimination in the second, and Stagnation in the third. They share a number and a diagram, and they were written for three different purposes, which is why we show all three rather than translating one into the others. What does gate 12 mean in Human Design?
Caution, in the Throat centre. Human Design places gate 12 in the Throat and reads it as caution: the voice that speaks only when the mood is right, the articulation of feeling that waits for its moment. Whether it is active in your chart depends on where your planets were at birth and about eighty-eight days before it.
What is Gene Key 12?
The same number read as a spectrum: the shadow of vanity, the gift of discrimination, the siddhi of purity. Gene Keys reads the shadow as the starting point and the gift as what it becomes when it is met rather than fought.
Is hexagram 12 the same as gate 12?
The same figure and the same number, read for different purposes: the I Ching reads it as a situation you have cast or are in, Human Design as a fixed activation in a birth chart. A cast hexagram is not a natal gate, and the site keeps the two apart.
